Ok, I've installed laminate flooring and used the $50/roll underlayment. It wasn't much more than a thin foam sheet with a thin mil plastic attached. I have seen on some DIY shows where they are putting down the same type floor but only using heavy mil plastic sheet like painters use and taping the seams with ductape.

Have any of you used this before? I always thought that the cheap underlayment was expensive @ $50/roll becuase it looks dirt cheap to manufacture. Your thoughts?

depends on why you want it. The tape and mil is fine as a moisture barrier. I used the roll underlayment to help with the noise.

The foam is great if you have an uneven floor (some tile, some wood, and some concreat) it fills in all the small defects and makes the floor Quiet. I have it under all my flooring,I live in an "old" house, and it makes a great improvement.
Vapor barier would be OK if you have a very smoothe floor to start.
$55 sounds like somebody is making a profit (like Exxon). I only pay $16 at a discount flooring co.

Assume you are buying qty 100sqft roll? Where can you get foam underlayment for $16 roll?

I got the foam at the Door & Window and More Store in Sherman,Texas. They have several different kinds, one is for sound deadening, one for concreate, and one for wood. The most expensive they have is like $24 for 100 sq. ft. roll. :)
