I haven't used anyone local, but we've shipped drives to several services from the web, and had decent results from them all.

How failed is it? non recognizable?

I've restored data using a bunch of recovery tools as well.

And, as dumb as this sounds...

Put the drive in the freezer for 5-6 hours, in a plastic bag, then slap it in an external enclosure and see if it works.

I didn't believe it either, til I tried it and it worked :D

X2....I have done this also. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Also, tell them to make backups. Can't stress this enough. All my digital pics are backed up to a secondary hard drive and a DVD. The DVD is kept at my work (just in case your house burns down or something)

The drive is clicking. I already tried the above.

Any idea what the technical reasoning behind it is? Just asking since I don't know, not trying to be a smart ass. :)

yea, i was going to post something then i saw it was you posting and you know enough computer shit to have tried basic/intermediate recovery stuff.

ive never tried one of the drive recovery services. let me know how it works out... and how much they wind up charging for that kind of thing.

people bring me broken computers at work all the time. most of them with trashed hard drives that need advanced recovery but bail out when i tell them the price is way up there.

The company I posted has what they call economy service that will cost no more than $700. The "economy" about it is can take several weeks rather than days.

FWIW when I sent my drive to them that ended up being unrecoverable, they rebuilt everything physically possible before they determined the servos were damaged. Now I have no idea what that cost parts and labor but keep in mind it was in the clean room some 14hrs or so and it cost me nothing since they couldn't recover my data. :) :(

depending on the issue, i was told that it hardens some of the rubber used as shock absorbers for the arm and plates, which typically fail and cause the hardware malfunction... i.e. arm not moving, arm stuck, or plates not spinning.

To be honest i have no real idea :)
