I bought the 360 for the hd dvd player add-on and we see where that got me. I just wondered if there was any rumor or plans for a BlueRay add on; or if I should dump this console and get a PS3.

Are you just renting at this point? If so, why not just use the downloadable content? Most of it is HD, good sound...etc. I feel that regardless of THIS format war, downloadable content is the future of at least rentals.
Anyway, there was a rumor of a Blu-ray player for the XB360 but no details were available the last I checked. (google it and you'll probably see the same shit I did) However, due to the XB360 marketplace and getting movies from there I would not ditch the XB360 in favor of the PS3.....for movie purposes. If you like the game selection and/or that console better, by all means do it. Just remember, I don't think the PS3 has any sort of online market place for games, movies and so forth.
When I bought my XB360 (which does not include the HD-DVD player) - movie playing was not top priority to me. I feel external/stand alone players will probably end up superior to the built-in/add-on player for a console in the long run.
Take care,

no, there will never be a blu-ray addon for the 360. Microsoft is trying to make money of downloading HD movies. if they made an addon then it would just be giving that money to sony.

Here are several articles, some that contridict that proves no one really knows for sure. This also includes articles that support a Blu-Ray add-on even though it would help Sony...and why.
The only thing known for sure and talked about by Microsoft is their desire to take over the world with downloadable content and to make physical media obsolete.

yea, I would say who knows... First even blu-ray has to win the format war. Because currently DVD and downloads are kicking its ass. I just don't see consumers paying 30 bux for a blu-ray movie being mainstream, not unless prices come down drastically. Personally, I see downloads being the way of the future. Why do we need a disc anymore really?

1. broadband service does not cover %100 of the world.
2. not everyone uses their systems online.
3. discs will ALWAYS give the consumer a sense of security in their purchase.

good points.. But still why would the majority pay 30 bux for a blu ray disc when they can get the DVD for 15 with a good upconvert player and content such as directors cuts and special editions. IMO... Blu Ray has a long way to go to be considered the replacement for DVD.

PS3 has the PlayStation Network, where you can download games (I downloaded the full version of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue) as far as movies they don't have any except for movie trailers, game trailers, etc.
I agree that the future is in downloadable HD content, but I don't think it will be mainstream for a while... I do like using Netflix's Instant Movies.

well according to what I've been reading, PS3 should have movie downloads soon.

Xbox live owns! Playstation network is meh.. But Blu-Rays do have to come down in price for people to want a blu ray player. But also people would have to have an HD tv already. I think it'll be a couple of years from now.

Honestly I'm glad consoles have competition in all media areas. Drives down prices and just promotes all companies to get the competitive edge. I am though biased to a US owned company than a foreign company for my purchases most of the time.

why do we need a disc? Downloading 20-30gb for 1 movie isnt going to happen. Not just that, anyone who likes to collect movies or wants to watch one again is going to be sad their 500 gig hard drive only holds 10-20 movies. A full 1080p requires way to much bandwidth to be possible with the current internet connections and bandwidth limitations not to mention hard disk space.
I have FIOS at home and have downloaded a couple HDDVD/BluRay movies and it takes a few hours to download a movie...Im downloading at 1.86mb/s. I couldnt imagine how long it would take for someone a midgrade cable package. Limited at 200k/s, it would take forever

In the spirit of most arguments at this point it is more for rental type downloads - not to keep. I think most of them expire after 24 hours so it makes sense to delete them. A 5ishG movie is buffered enough to start within 2-5 minutes and is fully downloaded in 30 minutes or so. I too have FiOS.
As far as movies for keeps, I don't see it happening until a single platform is popular and bandwidth speeds are higher. I see it staying on the provider's gear and you just watch it when you want to. (yeah, I odn't the details, but some high level view like that)
For the people who say this could never happen because of people not being either connected to the Internet or not everyone having broadband. Wrong. It is happening because enough people are to make it worthwhile.

b/c when you DL a movie (legally) it will only stay on your system for a certain amount of time... wih a disk you can keep... that being said I wont buy a blu ray player prob till xmas time, when I believe prices will come down.
and as ceyko has stated I've seen a many articles on gamespot.com that say Microsoft is in talks about a blu ray add on or internal, but Microsoft wont talk about it

I'm commenting on the disk you can keep part.
I know there are a lot of people out there who collect movies for the sake of collecting them and bragging that they have 2 million movies. However, there is a large population of people who also realize they can watch a move several times at 5-6 dollars a pop for rental until they exceed the 25-35 dollar price tag. Hell, I used to be a collector and have 400 disk changers - until I really started doing the math and realized it made no sense....financially.
Definetly not busting on people who like to collect, but for a lot of people renting makes sense. If you REALLY dig a flick, then buy. What I'm hoping is that broadband keeps growing, because it really is nice renting a movie without ever getting out of the recliner. :D
Of course none of this accounts for getting backups from the Internet either. Still, I'd rather rent a flick just to be sure it is good enough to waste the time making backups.

Concur. Why would Sony turn down millions? They might as well not allow Toshiba and other vendors to make blu-ray players as well.

Not so fast.....
After months of rumors and denials, the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive is due to be manufactured soon and shipped in Q3 of 2008. Pegatron Technology, an OEM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, is reported to have received the winning order from Microsoft for a Blu-ray equipped XBOX 360.

Concur as well, it does not make any sense and I hope it does happen. I think more for smack talking though, still not sure I'll get the Blu-Ray player - since I do really like the downloadable content. It will be nice to have the option one way or another though.

wonder if it will be equally hackable.
maybe the price of the current premium model will drop enough so i might want one.
