OK so the laptop I use to tune the cars is an old Compaq Presario 1200 running Win98 SE and it has no ethernet port obviously, only a telephone port for dialup. It does have a cardbus on the side so Im assuming I can buy a wireless card and just throw it in there to use my routers wifi in the house?

Now all the cards Im looking at from Best buy say it must be Win 2000 or higher. Any help with getting a card for a win 98 machine?

Ill have to wait to get home, blocked here at work.
How about a new laptop? Cuz a card is going to run you about $30 bucks for an ok one. Get a modern laptop w/ built in wifi. Just a suggestion. You can always use it for other things too. :)

Dont have the cash for one. The ONLY reason I need to get this thing on the internet is to get Java loaded on it and it requires the computer to be connected to the net. Otherwise I would do what I have been doing and just install the windows update files or anything I need onto my thumbdrive and just move it from my desktop to my laptop that way.
I can use dialup since I have a dialup access number from ATT in case my DSL ever drops but I cant use the home Lan line to dial up with because the dsl signal screws with the computer.

Then just borrow someone's PCMCIA card or usb card for 5 minutes to download java and you're good to go. That's what I would do. Why buy something that you're never going to use again?

Also I would rather have this $50 laptop stolen from my car rather than a $500+ laptop. All I use this thing for is tuning cars.

In case I need to get online again for another update.
And by the way, I have that same laptop in m closet somewhere. I bought it brand new in 2000 when I went to UT - Austin. It was really cool back then. I somehow managed to squeeze Windows XP on there w/ hardly and ram and a tiny hard drive. I think the hard drive is like 5 or 6 gigs. Too bad the battery doesn't hold charge anymore :(

Yeah its tiny but it serves its purpose well. Mine doesnt hold a charge very well either. Maybe 20 minutes tops. I have a AC/DC thing for the ciggerette lighter than I can plug the charger into for "test drives" and taking it to the track.

Go to Frys and buy the weekly special Airlink PCMCIA card they sell for like 8.99 then get online, go to driverguide.com and start searching for drivers. I would bet money there is a driver that would work with win98..and in most cases the win2000 driver will work for 98.

Does the laptop have USB?
If you can't find a PCMCIA card then you may be able to find a USB Wireless adapter to do the same thing.
If you can't find one to work with 98SE, at least try to upgrade to 2000. somebody should have a loaner copy laying around.

Went to Frys and of course they had their wireless cards on sale for $8 so I got one and it worked fine with the drivers that were included. Downloaded Java finally and figured out I couldnt install it because it requires 32 megs of Ram and this antique only has 28 megs, lol. Owell guess Ill be looking around for a new laptop when I get some more money. :(
