can you do salt water in a hot tub? i know nothing about hot tubs and a friend of mine is giving me a big one for free. people with pools always tell me how much greater the salt water pools are and im not sure if the same applys for hot tubs. any suggestions? also how hard are they to keep up with? ill probably use it about 1-3 times a week.

I don't see why not - people with pools that don't have salt water chlorine generators can and do put salt in their pools for the better feeling water. Just test the water regularly and they're not too hard to take care of.

they are a little harder in a pool to me cause the heat builds alot of calcium

bromine doesn't get used up at the high temps like Chlorine would and it's usually the sanitizer of choice for stand alone hot tubs. Here's a pretty good article to read about the maintenance on a hot tub.

You would have to have a salt/chlorine generator. Not exactly sure what it's called. I'm sure they make smaller models for hot tub applications. Salt systems require very little upkeep. I have never heard anyone just throwing salt into a chlorine pool. It wouldn't accomplish much except screwing up your chemistry.

how would it screw up the chemistry?

It wouldn't do anything. It wouldn't be creating chlorine. Now I am not positive it would mess up the chemistry. I should have said maybe but I wonder how salt would react with everything else if it wasn't being converted. It might be tough on equipment with it's corosive qualities. At any rate, adding salt wouldn't achieve anything. There would be no benefit and it would add cost. The water would still have the attributes of a chlorinated pool.

I think he was just looking for the feel of salt in the water. It wouldn't do anything other than that. Probably right on the corrosive side but chlorine is corrosive as well.

Yep...and it's easy. Most of the time you just need to add the sea salt.

It will keep your tub clean as well, as it acts as a natural chlorinator.

I plan on a big (10x10 or so) in ground salt water hot tub later this year/early next.

call a company that makes the salt systems and ask them. Im not sure if it would work due to the high heat most people use bromine
