When our house was built we got a few builder extras included, surround sound pre-wired, covered back porch, and a GE side-by-side fridge. That was just over 4 years ago and this fridge is messing up. The freezer is fine, but this morning the fridge part was blowing hot air and my half full gallon of milk looked ready to burst. Its got a temp control for both sides and it keeps going dead. Looked up the model number and it not available at local retailers (builder exclusive?). Service call is $75 plus parts and labor, but not sure what it would cost to repair.

a new side by side (25 cu ft or more) is gonna run you a grand at the low end - I'd call someone to fix a fridge that's only 4 years old.

Shit, I replaced the "cold control" on my 20 year old GE for about $80 so I don't believe that the part is no longer available. Check the internet. Where I got mine.

Also, make sure that the fan in the back is turning and that the coils are not full of hair and other crap.

Oh , and the fridge is fed from the freezer side. Make sure that the passageway is not clogged up with ice, or that the air door is not stuck closed.

I've checked all that I can and everything is free of dust, and no ice build up. I think it has to be the temp control. The fridge comes on when it wants to and if the temp control light is on then it blows cold if its off then it blows hot. I entered the model number on google and it seems that of these fridge's in the model family I have are being repaired or replaced at GE's expense so I have a number to call at 7am to see if I qualify. And I saw the prices of a comparable 22 cubic foot and decided that repair is the way to go for now.

Sealed parts warranty is 5 years so I'm still within the parts warranty. Earliest they can get me in on an emergency call is Thursday. I wanted to say "whats the rush"??? Going to see if I can find a local repair person now.

GE repair guy just left, $265 to replace the control board. He told me he replaces these on a daily basis on the model family I have. Its apparently a known defect. I was literally a 10 minute job. I was worried when the initial estimate was nearly $500 but you have to have a fridge. Now to see what major appliance will crap out next.
