do you have the DIY channel? There is a show called "Rock Solid" and thats the kind of stuff they do. its really not that hard. Lots of physical work, but not hard.

I like the way it looks. I did a walkway several years ago & it turned out great. Decided I wanted to do a patio, but I think im in over my head. It's one thing dealing with 30 pound walkway stones, the ones for the patio are all 150 or so pounds.

We did a flagstone patio around our pool two years ago and it was not that hard.

I used a dolly to move the stones around and just kept mixing up portland and sand. I would rent a mixer next time to get it done quicker.

Other than that it took two weekends to get it done but mines was not grassed it was concreted in at the joints.

I made this little grilling area off to the side of my pool a couple of years ago. I don't think you're planning to use entire 150 pound flagstone pieces without breaking them down are you?

I bet you can do this without any help from a contractor

That is funny we did the same thing with the entrances to the backyard. We put those texas shaped blocks made out of pea gravel and raised them 1/4 of an inch in the concrete. Very nice.

I've been meaning to buy some of those to make a path to the gate in the backyard. I'm Mr. "way to proud of Texas" guy.

I wish I could find a good picture of the one I built. 4 tons of flagstone, lord knows how many 12x8x4 blocks to build the border and 2 dump trucks of sand. Moved it all from the front yard to the back yard and built it myself. Started about 2 inches above the ground on the side by the house, then had to build it up about 10 inches to keep it level, yard had a slope. I mixed kwikcrete in a coffee can, a little on the watery side, then poured it between each rock after I leveled them, and it held up really well.

Tore it out when we had the pool built like 3 years later.

As far as big peices, you can always get a rock chisel and small sledge hammer and cut/break them into different sizes.

Screw flag stones. Stamped concrete FTW!!! I did over 600 sq. feet last year for my patio. They stamped it as the hand cut stones and put in one base color and like 3 highlights. It looks great.

I've seen some really cool stuff done with stamped concrete. Can't go wrong with that choice. I already had the flagstone left over from a different project so that's why I went that route.

How about some pics. I have been thinking about stamped concrete for my patio.

I have some at work. I'll try to upload them if I get a chance. I used a place that's in Carrolton now. Link is below, and my patio looks like the two pics at the bottom of the home page as far as the style and colors. It has a step down, and they stamped the sides too.

Mind giving the price on what yours cost to do? I am looking to do a back patio about the same size and have been debating flagstone or stamped concrete. Interested to see the cost difference.

I still don't understand why anyone goes thru all the effort to build a flagstone patio when you could use concrete pavers. I worked as a rep for Pavestone for 4 years and I would gladly assist any one with building one. Its very easy and cost effective, plus, if it shifts, it don't crack...just my .02
