Can anyone describe doctrine differences between the Church of Christ and Southern Baptist? I know about the music/singing/praise/worship differences..... I am just confused about baptism/forgiveness and any other differences in beliefs....
I feel that the church you go to does not define whether or not you are a Christian... I mean, can someone say that Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr, and Mother Teresa are going to burn in hell because they were not going to one specific church denomination?

Though most of them have recently gotten away from it, they use to believe that they were the only "church" that would go to heaven. They have communion at every service, which I don't consider wrong so much, but it tends to become repetitious instead of an important event. Baptism I believe is the same, (full submersion). Other than that, and what you already mentioned, they are very alike.
Oh... and if I remember right, by the Church of Christ beliefs, you ain't saved till baptism.

Well, I've been a Member of the Church of Christ my entire life, I'm going to marry a baptist and my Parents are livid.... I don't see how the differences are gonna be that big of a deal.

Maybe its because they are still in the belief that the Church of Christ are the only ones going to heaven. A lot of them still hold that belief. I was reised Southern Baptist, but I have moved more to the Independant Baptist. Mainly because I dont care to answer to the Southern Convention leaders. My wife is from the Church of Christ and we get along fine.
I can understand your parents concern if they are old school.

Southern Baptist believe that baptism is an act of obedience after salvation that is a physical picture of the inner change, the death of the old self buried with Christ. It is not seen as essential to salvation by Baptists, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God"—(Ephesians 2:8)
Take note that the thief on the cross was not baptized. Also, if baptism were necessary for salvation, then it would be impossible for someone to be saved in a plane, train, automobile, etc. because what if someone believed, yet the vehicle crashed before they had a opportunity to get baptized? Would they be damned even though they showed faith and repentance?
Romans 6:4
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Colossians 2:12
having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

"Honey, I will only say I love you once a month so it does not because repetitious."
Of with your kids.
"Sarah/Billy, don't draw me anymore pictures. Only one every 3 months. It tends to become repetitious."

So, where are ya'll going to go after you get married? Which church are you getting married in? Which preacher? You might want to work that out and let it marinate before saying those vows.
My wife grew up in the Church of Christ and her parents have an outlook similar to your fiancé’s parents. For my part, if they are in town or I'm at their home, we go to a Church of Christ. It's not what they want, but it helps the family relationship. (I'm some sort of closeted Agnostic)
Throughout my marriage I've visited at least 10 different Church of Christ. I've found them all to be overtly defensive and constantly speaking bad against other denominations. They speak more against other denominations then they do against nonbelievers. Overall, it's an uncomfortable experience. You wife probably may not be able to tolerate visits there if she remains committed to her Baptist upbringing.

Christ used the "yearly" passover to establish the communion on. It is not our way of "drawing pictures for God" or "saying we love Him" primarily.
Not every time when the disciples "broke bread" was it a communion, it is another word for sharing a meal together.

That is absolutely true...as long as you go to a bible believing church. It's the old desert island scenario. If you were stuck on a desert island could you be saved with just a bible in hand and no church....? Of course. Salvation does not know limits. They are placing the four walls of the church on higher authority than scripture that says WHOSOEVER calls upon the Lord shall be saved Rom 10:13. It doesn't say "WHOSOEVER is a part of this church or that church."

Point well taken, but I look at it as a bigger event of celebration of love and commitment. Since how you used the analogy with the love for my wife... How about celebrating your anniversary 3 times a week? It would lose some of the zest in my personal opinion.
But like I said, I don't think its wrong at all, just too repetitious for me.

Do you have a Bible passage to back this up or at least a historic exaple?
St. Basil, or Trinity Theory fame, said he participated in communion 3 times a week, SUnday, Wednesday, Friday. This is 3nd Century.
Justin Martyr said every Sunday.

Yes, because we all know that Jews would be alright with eating flesh and drinking blood from another jew. Especially the flesh and blood of a god-jew-messiah.
Just don't boil him in his mother's milk ;)

This pdf from Pastor Jim gives a good defense for it.

Many people read what someone said about the opposition than argue against the fiction.
You understand that you have to understand the opposition to debate them.
Jews would ahve a problem with eating the flesh and blood of someone.
John 6:53 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?"
John 6:60 Then many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?"
John 6:66 As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

Southern Baptist allow you to repent and be forgiven, over and over again. Just say Im sorry and yer good.
Church of Chrust says you will burn for even thinkin' about it.
even insticts created by god himslef are a sin.

Thanks, I sincerely enjoy you and philly and your posts as well. One thing I really hate is non-theists with an agenda to attack theists. There are blogs all over the net where it is almost expected that you start off any post by saying how evil christianity (or whatever) is. That is stupid IMO. Spirited opinions are one thing, but empty claims are too much for a good forum.
