Does anyone know of a company on the Plano side of things that can get my laptop back up, preferably today? The long and short of it is that it went down last night with a virus and is now BSOD. It crashed because I saved the registry, deleted a couple keys, uninstalled a couple programs, still couldn't find the files that the av website said would go with the virus (trojan kill av) and when I finally gave up tried to reimport the saved registry. Well, that didn't work and it said all keys didn't import. The next move was to save all my data but XP decided that it was going to run update and restart for me while I was dealing with my kids.

Now I can't get the sob to boot. I can't run R from the install disk either because the admin password has changed to an unknown. This after logging in as admin in safe mode prior to it crashing. Yet that password will not work. Now I have data on this hard drive that I need now and can't get to it.

So I need help. Badly. Does anyone know who can get this done now, and not in the usual week or so turn around?

The only other thing that I know to do is go buy a cable this morning that will allow me to slave it on the main pc. Does anyone think this will allow me to get at my data?

the company is out of plano and while it is a smaller mom and pop outfit the guy mike really knows what he is doing. just give him a call and see how soon he can get it done. I think he lives not too far from you.

I took it to this guy, who ran his utilities, and then called me conceding defeat. He thinks the file structure has collapsed. I think it's the registry. Regardless, he can't access any data.

Does anyone have ADVANCED level skills at recovery?

Hunt4m3x, check your pms bro.

Fuck. :(

No need to feel bad bro. He only charged me a hundred bucks to confirm that everything I had already done did not work.

Seriously, you tried to help and I do appreciate it.

Mike - go get yourself an apricorn laptop drive enclosure and an extra laptop drive to go in it. Comes with backup software, and very easy to use. If your existing drive takes a shit or gets corrupted just swap drives in the laptop and be rolling again.

It was easy. Basicly he lost ownership of his folders and whatnot. The guy thought he lost them, so he was trying to recover them, but the permissions/ownership was just lost. After taking over ownership, he files appear. made a 1:1 copy of his drive and just reformatted it using xp, not shithole MCE. Working 10x better and faster. Plus, it has Antispyware, virxx, 20gigs of pron.

So how do you regain ownership when that happens? I've heard of that scenario so many times w/out any explanation.

So, was the drive locked with a password? I've never seen one that had a password on it so that you couldn't format it or access it from an external OS.

Free pron FTW! So... is this new pron or the stuff that was already on it? :D

Will do MikeyB. As it is this was a freak and I was at the point of pulling my data off when it went down.

Aight guys, Hunt won't name a price and doesn't really want a crap load of booze. Any suggestions on what I can do to show my appreciation? This dude saved my ass in a big way. What is the latest toy for the l33t ?

The drive has firmware that locks the drive. On a desktop, when it boots up, it asks for a password, which he had. Even if it was lost or whatever, i was reading that the xbox hdunlocker can unlock the samsung drives.

Cool.. I've just never encountered a drive that asked for a password when I was trying to access it as a slave or trying to format it with an external source.

OK I read that article and I have a question if you don't mind answering it.

I did a non-destructive reinstall on 1-08 and had it back everything up incase I missed something when doing it on my own. That file is 25+ gigs and now just sits there. I have tried deleting it every way I can think of to no avail. I get an error blah blah blah... I contacted Gateway to hell's moron suppport and they said I have to do a destructive reinstall to regain my 25+ gigs back. If this is not true would you be willing to show/tell me how to delete it prease? :D

So there is nothing in that folder you need now?

I would use a bootcd and boot in a different environment (winpe) and delete it from there.

Hirens is my choice. Boot that, use one of their file managers then delete it from there.

A PE CD with a remote registry editor has made me look like a genius plenty of times especially when it comes to files that are hosed with permission issues or virus/spyware stuff.

Since you asked, is it poss. that there are sys. files in that folder that are need for the current install that if deleted would render my puter useless? If not wich app. on Hirens do I need to use?
