why is it not the best for personal protection? I would think anything that can put holes in someone would work?

I'm only asking because I'm in the market for a gun now since my house was robbed.

You want a bullet to dump all of it's energy into it's target not "zing" through it. FMJ ammo (cheap target ammo) will go through a target and not expand and dump any energy. A good hollow point bullet (or any of the exotic ammo that's out there) will expand and dump it's energy into the target and not exit out the other side leaving causing massive trauma to what you are shooting.

To answer you question Mike is sorta tricky. There are different schools of thought (IMO) about what makes a good bullet for personal protection. Some thing a ultra velocity bullet will do the trick like Corbon or any quality +P ammo. Some believe that a "heavy" bullet (more weight/grain) is better. And there are a variety of different kinds of hollow point designs like Federal's Hydra Shok (sp?), Winchester's Ranger (Talon), and (can't think of the manufacturer) the Gold Dot ammo.

I'll differ to someone that has a better opinion of what's good for a 9mm. I haven't owned one in a while. Whatever you decide, make sure to buy a few boxes to see how you shoot the ammo (accuracy) and how it feeds in your gun.

Speer makes the Gold Dot, and then there's also the Hornady XTP (eXtreme Terminal Performance).

If I didn't carry my own stuff (10mm with 155 grain XTPs at about 1400 fps), I've heard good things about DoubleTap ammo.

I like Rangers or Glaser bullets. Glasers are basically a hollow jacket filled with fine shot, so when the bullet hits, it doesn't penetrate as much as flatten out. The upside to it is all of the momentum is pushed down like a collumn on the same spot, like train cars in a derailment. With hollow points, the mass of the bullet is pushed away from the center of the wound. They both have their upsides, but hollow points are way cheaper in most cases.

I have Winchester Ranger SXTs in mine. However, I put more stock in training how to put a bullet on target than what kind of bullet I use. It's not like drag racing where you get better ETs by buying more shit.

My gf uses a 10/22 loaded w/ CCI stingers..... I use Winchester 230 gr personal Protection ammo... I won't use handloads in any self defense handgun... That's asking for a lawsuit.
Propellerhead is right, one 22lr between the eyes is lethal....

Speer gold dot hollow points or Ranger SXT's are my personal choice. Any good hollowpoint should do the trick.

Show me 1 example of where somebody carrying handloads has been taken to court for carrying handloads.

Besides, I'm just carrying Hornady XTPs. Where did I get them? Cabela's. As for their assembly, that's another story...

True that. But if you can handle them 110-125 gr. +P+. You're talking .357 performance.

I have Black Talons in one gun and Hydrashocks in another.

I heard the Black Talons used to be called Black Widows until a black lady (black widow) sued (the manufacturer I think) for making her a "black widow."

As told to me by a buddy who worked for the Smith County Sheriff's Dept.

Glaser safety slugs are the way to go for home defense.

Or I think it's MagTech that makes a 95gn projectile that has a HUGE hollowpoint that is for defense. It won't go through sheetrock, but it will put a large hole in flesh.

i like the Corbon Powerballs. I carry it in my Glock 27 ever since I shot some with a buddy. Shooting into a wet phone book, the lead expanded to almost the since of a quarter. That had me sold on them after seeing the expansion. Seem to be fairly accurate IMO. No better or worse than other hollow points that we shot that day.
