What's the difference between the Remington 770 and the Remington 700? The 700 seems to have a lot more variations and be chambered in more cartridges, and it's quite a bit higher than the 770. I'd like a .300 UltraMag, but that brass is pricey, the 700 is higher than the 770 (and I haven't seen a 770 in .300 UltraMag), and I don't think it could do anything I would be doing that the .300 Win. Mag. couldn't do.

770s are a cheap made rifle in my opionon.
Go with the 300 ultra in a 700, you wont be disappointed.

I believe the 770 has a detachable box mag if I'm not mistaken.

From what I've learned, the 770 is an update of the 710. The 710 was a cheaper produced rifle that allowed Remington to save money in production and compete with some of the cheaper brands. They used a different type of bolt that that is easier to produce and locks up differently from the 700 and used cheaper (plastic) parts like mag/floor plate catches, etc.
There were lots of issues with the 710 and I don't think they've been resolved with the 770.
A 700 isn't that much more expensive and is a way better rifle. If its a low-price thing, I'd lean toward a Savage 10, 100 or 110. They are a lower cost rifle, but are excellent shooters. I'd made my mind up that if I couldn't find a 700 at a good price, I'd get a Savage 110FP and spend the left over cash for a good scope.

.300 Win Mag is very stout, about the only reason I see to go with ultra mag would be for the shorter action but that results in a lighter gun which I would not want in this caliber ;) I have a .300 Win Mag in a Smith & Wesson rifle and it kicks worse and is louder than my .338! Both it and the .338 are very accurate though, even with me cringing when I pull the trigger :o

What do u mean by the 300 ultra mag has a shorter action? Im pretty sure its as long as my 338? 300 win is pretty short.

If I go with a 700, it'll be after I find a good supply of UltraMag brass. No need in half-assing this shit. :Dwhy ultra mag are you going elephant hunting? If you're already going to go big, might as well go really freakin' big.

if you hold a 770 you will quickly see why. The stock is horrible at best. Not sure about the 770 but you don't take apart the 710 it was permanently attached to the stock. Also if you looking at shooting a magnum the scopes that come with the 770 sure wouldn't hold zero worth anything.
I still don't get why your are looking at a 300win ultra if you looking for the cheapest options. Every shot will cost over a dollar and if you truly want a scope to support it thats gonna cost way more than the rifle.

My 338 costs my $2.30 for every shot I make. lol
It was an expensive bitch to sight in.

If the $100-200 difference between a 770 and 700 were purely cosmetic, I'd get the 770. Since it doesn't seem that that's the case, it looks like I'll be going with a 700 in either .300 Win. Mag. or .300 Rem. UltraMag eventually.
And with the UltraMag, even with brass at $50 per 100, I can load a round for $.30 for powder + $.15 for a bullet + $.03 for a primer + $.50 for brass, under $1/round.

Model 7 is the short action - SAUM and maybe WSM.
700 BDL, CDL - wood stocks I think.
700 SPS has 700 performance with cheaper stock.
700 XCR is stainless bad boy.
750 is the pump.
770 is bottom model. I think it comes pre-mounted with scope.
798 is the Mauser receiver.
799 is the mini-mauser receiver.
300 Ultra Mag is a shoulder buster. But you can get 3 different load levels: 1) 30-06, 2) 300 Win Mag 3) man that shit hurts.
If you reload, 30cal is pretty common to get bullets. Retumbo and Reloader 25 are good powders for Ultra magnums. After buying the brass and the dies, cost should be about the same, except for slight difference in powder charge. You can make that 60$/20rounds premium ammo for a lot less.
I really like that 799. I think that'll be my next rifle.

From out here in "had both" land, the 700 is a fine rifle that will never disapoint you in resale or performance. The 770 is great, but not as nice a quality as the 700.
Go with the 700 man.

I was at the pawn shop today and saw a Remington 700 in .300 UltraMag, nice-looking synthetic stock and fluted stainless steel barrel for $1,000. Teh sex. If they've got it there in two weeks, I'm gonna put some money down on it. :o

I don't think the platform will handle it, and if it did you would be looking at several times that much.
Why a 700?

Not sure, really. The Hornady manual says that's a pretty bad ass little cartridge. I don't think I have the scratch for a rifle that can handle that bad boy. :o

You should buy something that's not gay. :DLike an M1A? That's the plan, but this 700 I saw was so purty. If I'm lucky, it'll be gone when I go back up there next week, and I can keep saving my money for something else I don't need.

I think a CZ550 is good for it.
You might go one step lower, the ruger M77 comes in 458 Win Mag, that's a very nice cartridge. Or a 375 H&H, that is a really good medium-big bore.
You might be able to get those in the 700, I don't know. Not sure how big the bolt face is, and how much chamber material they offer. And the magwell may be too small.
I've always thought of the 700 as a 30 caliber platform.

I love my 700 and 721 in 300 H&H magnum. Many elk and deer lost to this caliber in my family. 710 and 770 or shit
Tony, that .458 Lott is EXCELLENT "bear and lion" medecine, as TR would say.
