5.1 surround positioning?

Anyone have a good site on how to position 5.1 surround systems? i just purchased my satelite speakers wall mounts and just want to know a good place to where it sounds great. ? ive looked around and cant find such a site, tia.

If your room is squared you can mount them in the corner of the ceiling and wall. Some mount them at head level. Not sure of any sites, you may try www.cnet.com

Level with the listener's ears is much better than mounting them high.

yesir, thats why the majority of tower speakers have the tweeter (and mid most of the time) @ ~4 feet. same goes for speaker stands. one in each corner between 3 and 5 feet and one on top of the tv!

EDIT: also most new receivers have a self tuning/calibation system to help with time correction and small balancing so placement only needs to be approximate...

Without knowing the dimensions of you room, final signal processing being used and current listening position. It hard for me to tell you the "proper" speaker placement.

The universal setup for 5.1 is rear speakers just behind the last row of seating facing the center listening position at about or just above ear hieght. (assuming you are using single pole bookshelf type speakers)

I have found that the inconvenience of having them in the way can be a pain, so I've had mine in the upper rear corners. If you have decent equipment, you can adjust them through the balancing to sound fine.
