View Full Version : Wow! What a difference a new DVD player makes (Upconversion?)

Not a thread for the format wars. Simply put, my circa 2000 DVD player started getting hung up on a few DVDs that worked fine on other players, so I figured it was getting worn out. Plus, the picture was crappy on the new LCD.
Yesterday I picked up a new, fairly cheap Sony (Link) (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8240879&st=sony+dvd+player&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1168044400579) with the upconversion/HDMI cable setup. HOLY HELL! The difference is amazing. Crystal clear, sharp picture that makes my budget Vizio look like hero.
So I guess the main purpose of this thread is to yell from the mountain top: if you have an older DVD player and a newer HDTV, go spend the +/-$150 on a new DVD player and be amazed. :)

Different format. The HD DVD source material is of a better quality to begin with. Though (in my opinion) BluRay seems to be the better technology. But like I said, this isn't about format wars.
The upconverted DVD player just makes the most out of that Matrix DVD you've had since '99. :D

I was amazed watching Spider Man 3 in BD on my ps3. So far it's the only dvd I have in BD format. I was told it upconverts also, I just haven't had time to put an old dvd in to check out the upconversion yet.

After boxing the whole damn thing back up and taking it back... yes. :D I just swapped for a different TV. It was quick, and easy. Yay Sam's Club.

Well, you can only mash the buttons on the damn thing so many times before you just have to give up and say "it's broken". :o

I've got a upconversion Toshiba that I got off of woot for $39. It looks just as good on regular DVD's as my Toshiba A2 HD DVD. It will also resize the picture better for some movies than my A2. The bad part about it is that it won't automatically set my surround receiver to the proper setting (dolby digital, dts, etc.) like the A2.

He have the Spider Man that came with ours and we bought 300, still waiting on the free movies..
It does upconvert, and it is hardly discernable from the BD's.. We have watched a bunch of regular DVD's.
