Anyone ever shot one of these or a Socom 16? How are they?
Ive been really looking into buying one of these due to the fact that 308 and 223 cost the same these days :o
Where would I find the best price on one locally?

Yeah I like the M1A platform, just not this socom thing.
I have one M1A and it's my distance shooter and it gets the job done.

I have used the Socom II what I like about it is that they are very accurate. The early Socom I's had some problem with them and people have shyed away from them for some reason although its been resolved. The Socom II has a VLTOR rail which is pretty cool the only problem is that the rifle feels like a Tank. The trigger pull is nice and smoothe and the rifle is very comfortable. Also you can remove the heavy rail and not use it which will lighten it up quite a bit. As far as optics go I would mount the Springfield scope on it or a Leupold CQT and my last pick would be an Aimpoint. The only problem with the Aimpoint and CQT is you would have to mount it on the Vltor rail which would be a problem if you wanted to take the rail off. The Socom II is an awesome rifle and very accurate and since the barrell is shorter than an M1A its very loud. Hope this helped.

damn, thanks sanddragger
I was thinking about throwing an eotech on it, I have one on my AR and love it. I like how you can take the rail off when you dont need it too. How is the recoil, and are these easy to clean? Field strip like a mini 14?
Thanks

I never field stripped one but I would think it would be very much like a Mini14.Recoils is not that bad but its loud. Its a lot louder than an AR for sure. As far as an eotech goes there nice for non precision work. After having the Mk4 CQT I rarely use my rifle with Eotech. The CQT does everything the Eotech does up close and does long range with precision. On Sunday I took my longest shot with an M4 and CQT mounted. I was 500 yards out and used M856 Tracer rd and hit the target on the second shot. The target was a 3ft tall and about 9inch wide welding tank so its not very wide. The first shot missed it by about an inch. Check out the M1a Loaded on Springfields web site and look at the scope on that rifle that would be awesome on the Socom II .
I have been interested in them for a year or more. Gunbroker usually has them around $1500.

Really want an M1a. Cheapest I seen the SOCOM model is $1600. Try CDNN or Bud's Gun shop. There's a SOCOM 16 and a SOCOM II. One has the rail system.
Barrel is kinda short. I like the Loaded ones better.
I'm with David on this one, I don't like the shorty. It seems like too much of a compromise. If you're shooting at close/medium ranges, an AR will do everything that will better. It's lighter, handier, and just as accurate at those ranges. I do like their NM and M21/M25 guns, though.

I have a M1A and I really enjoy it. Yes they are expensive, but they are fun to shoot and work really well for all sorts of events. (Hunting, Target Shooting).
For close ranges, an AR-15 will work fine, (I have a AR and a Mini-14, but I prefer the Mini-14 vs the AR). I like semi-auto guns, but I also like using them for hunting. So up to 100 yards I do like the mini-14 and the fact that the scope mounts right on top of the barrel. My AR has a carry handle (I wanted it perm attached because I like the way they look). Putting a scope on my AR raises it a good 3" off the top of the barrel. Thats my only issue.

Well I thought the whole purpose of the SOCOM was for close in work while still having the punch of a .308. Something the .223 is lacking at times and was well documented in the movie and book "Black Hawk Down". I think the SOCOM serves it's purpose well for what it was designed for.
Then I'd go with an AK or a mini-30 for close up work. That would probably save you $1000+ for close up work. That's a lot of 7.62x39mm money. :D

My opinion, the best gun for up to 100 yards for Hog Hunting is probably a SKS. (They are cheap, they work, and I don't care if I beat them up.).

LOL at the thread beginning with a top of the line M1A, and somehow working its way down to an SKS. Only on DFW stangs.

Accuracy is just not there with that short barrel SOCOM.
1.5in @ 100 yards is what the guy hit in G&A article on them. Most of the ammo was much larger group.
Still a great gun.
Heavy though.
Okay, okay, they look really cool too.

Damn, I thought you were talking about the .458 SOCOM... I'm ordering my upper with the IRS savings plan..... Actually uses your 5.56 magazines in a single stack configuration.... Gonna be fun seeing what 400 grain Tungsten core penetrators will do... Ordered 300 rounds of virgin brass and the dies yesterday.

One of my Friends has one, it is a blast to shoot, and never has had a problem when I have shot it. If I had the money I would buy one with out thinking twice about it.

try that out.... my old buddy from the Corps gave me the link.... his dad built 4 of them so far...
I thought about the 338 spectre, but decided the 458 was a lot more versatile....

Hmm... I can't remember that last Ace Hardware store that I've ever seen. That's cool though. I wish the Walmart in my area still carried firearms :(
