i have had my glock17 for awhile now and i need to learn how to clean it on my own. i have gone shooting twice and after each time my buddies(who are pretty gun savvy) helped me clean it with their cleaning kits.
i bought the gun used(it had maybe 2 magazines worth of ammo through it) and all it came with was the gun, one magazine and the case. no cleaning kit or booklet.
which would be a better choice:
A. try to find a glock manual/cleaning kit at a gun show
B. buy a glock book(if there is such a thing) and a fancy cleaning kit
thanks for any advice

What do you need to know. Seriously, basic cleaning is just taking the top half off. the barrel will fall out, and theres a spring. You can basically clean everything you need right there if you're just firing a few rounds here and there through it. There's no need for you to go in and disassemble the firing mechanism or the clips. That's my .02 anyways, and I've had my glock for years with no trouble. You can copy my manual if you live anywhere close to McKinney.

C. Have a gun savoy friend show you how.
D. I know I've seen a video on youtube or similar site.
I'll look around and see if I can find it. I doubt that after you break it down once that you'll ever have problems doing it again.

dude, seriously. the glock is like the easiest pistol in the world to clean. field strip it and use simple green on the frame, scrub the internals with a toothbrush then rinse it with water and some compressed air like you use on your computer keyboard. then use break free to clean the slide with q-tips, patches and a toothbrush. non chlorinated brake cleaner also works well. clean the barrel with a bore brush, a rod, and some hoppies or similar powder solvent. you can also use blue wonder bore cleaner on the tube if there is a lot of copper fouling, just remember to run some oil through the bore afterward. there is absolutely no reason to detail strip it.

the only part you will ever need to be able to take apart is the slide/barrel
if your bottom half is fucked... time to send the gun to glock.

you never need to detail strip those. i wouldnt detail strip it unless something goes wrong or im changing a trigger spring or trigger bar. all detail stripping it does it wears out pin holes in the frame.

ive had over a half dozen glocks and simple green was never a problem. you just have to rinse it off and dry it within a couple of minutes. gunscrubber (which is nonchlorinated brake cleaner) left spots on my glock frame that wouldnt come off without using break free clp. a lot of those solvents (like hoppes) will actually eat plastic and polymer. i know from experience. many of them are only designed to be used on metal. break free is the only thing i would use on the polymer frames besides water, simple green, and synthetic safe gunscrubber.

All I have ever done is field strip it, toothbrush the slide, bore brush through the barrel (clp for both) and wipe it down.. Voila.

you need to make sure to put a drop of oil where the trigger bar and connector meet in the receiver. if you dont the trigger can get a little rough.

He shouldn't be cleaning a gun that's loaded in the first place.
Mike I'm sure this is common sense, but it never hurts to be reminded.
Rule 1. Always hold it with your finger off the trigger.
Rule 2. Take out the magazine.
Rule 3. Check and recheck the chamber by pulling back on the slide to make sure the chambers empty.

No worries then, you're set to go. If you don't have a cleaning kit already you can get one at Wal Mart for like $15. I just went and got one for my P99 I just bought.

glock should have the owner's manual in a pdf on their website which will detail the cleaning required.
Go to academy and buy the pistol cleaning kit, read both sets of instructions and get to work. buy more ammo, fire and repeat!

Mike, hit me up if you need someone to show you. You should have the barrel brush that came with the Glock and a can of Break Free and your all set. Glock's aren't finicky so you don't need to clean them often :D

Don't go all out on a cleaning kit. Hell I might have a 9mm brush setting around somewhere (I used to own a Glock 19). I'll see if I can find it.
Ya, I would be down for that. I've got some .223 and 12 gauge ammo that needs some going through :D
