I may have the opportunity to shoot 415 yards this weekend and can't say i've ever shot nearly that far. If i get my .223 on at 100 yards how high do i have to raise to get on paper at 415 yards?

I will be shooting no larger than a 55 grain bullet out of my sps varmint.

if you give me the the ballistic coefficient and velocity i can get you in the ballpark.

assuming 3200fps and a BC of .272 (based off the Sierra BT 55gr FMJ) the come up i got was 6.5 MOA at 400 off a 100 yard zero at the same temp. dont forget to figure in the temp difference from when you zero'd. the cold will drop the point of impact. so it might take a little more come up then my calculation.

so it should actually be on paper or close to it. All i have the rifle sighted in to at the moment is 50 yards indoor so ill be re sighting it in in the field.

place in waco. http://www.carlchandler.com/

the website kinda acts like its not an everyday thing so im gonna call tomorrow and see what it takes to get to try it out.

Its a public range but they also do alot of law enforcement shooting

give me a minute and ill calculate it from your 50 yard zero. assuming the velocity and BC are close, it should be on paper. my calculation is sea level based, and i use the industry std of 59* F.

come up at 400 off a 50 yard zero is 6 MOA. anyway, that should get you on paper, as long as the BC, velocity, ambient temp, and elevation are close. if it were me id dial in between 6 and 7 MOA to your glass and see how close it is. you might want to log what it does what it does, what ammo, ect.

what are you basing these calculations on? (what formula)

thanks for that ill have to put it to the test.

is it 6 moa at 100 yards to compensate or 6 moa at 415 yards?

pretty sure you mean at 100

mOst commercial .223 chrono's much lower than that.
You would have to get 5.56 to get that high.

off your 50 yard zero dial up between 6 and 7 MOA at your 415 yard target. 6 MOA at 400 is ~24" of elevation. as long as the velocity and ballistic coefficient of the load is close it should get you on paper.

off you 50 yard 0 for 100 yards given if the above variable are correct youd come down on your scope around 1.5 MOA.

i shoot .308, actually the168gr Sierra BTHP black hills load, so i just based the estimates off the 55gr black hills .223 load that is 3200fps, and the BC off the 55gr sierra BT FMJ. hopefully its close. he could always plug the variables into the calculator and see what it gets him. i really have no idea what the commercial grade 55gr .223 chronos and and has for BC. i would need some closer numbers (preferably a specific load) in order to get a closer base dope.

sad found out they closed the long range so it looks like ill only get to shoot 185 yards.

i dropped the velocity (3000) and BC (.260) a little. based on your 50 yard zero, at 200 youd go up about 1.25 MOA, so at 185 id dial up 1 MOA.
