From the site:
...no event captures the universal human need to whale on old crapcans and hoover down greasy barbecue like the 24 Hours of LeMons.
Pretty well says it all that needs to be said. Very cool.

My bad... I didn't check out the link. Apparently it really is a race of lemons! $500 total investment in the vehicles! LOL... that should be entertaining! :)
The site says that each team should have 4-6 drivers.
I'll go in on a team if anyone is interested. I have a tow vehicle but I don't have a trailer or a place to store a car.

I figure an old 305/307 equipped g-body or 302 powered older fox chassis car would probably be best. Thoughts?

This race has GRANADA written all over it. Unfortunately I think you need something with a stick tranny for longevity in this thing. I wouldn't want to use an auto.

Hot Rod did a story on LeMons last month (i think), and they used a 5.0 powered Mark VIII with an auto tranny, and in the end the tranny overheated and grenaded itself. I'd figure a good cooling system would be above and beyond the most important factor in choosing a car.

Exactly, you don't want an auto tranny. I guess if you have to go with one you'd want a deep ass pan and a good trans cooler at the very least. i'd just hate to use one
I'd make sure the cooling system is good and replace all the fluids with synthetic. Replace the front wheel bearing grease with synthetic too.
A turbo coupe might be interesting but if the turbo takes a shit you are done.
500$ limit so don't have anything too nice or they'll shit all over you.

yup. they have judges that take a look at your car and dock you so many laps for every certain amount over $500 they think you spent.
they also reserve the right to buy the car from you or destroy it so that people don't throw $1000 dollar parts on there.

Big ass tranny cooler, synthetic fluids throughout, new tranny filter, remove the thermostat, open-up the grill area of the car, electric fan(x2??), should be good to go right? I know those old SBC motors will run until hell freezes over unless you just totally run it with no oil or something. The older Turbo 350 equipped g-body and c4 equipped foxes I'd think would outlast the AODs in the newer Fords.

That sounds like a good basic plan to freshen it up and keep it running. I'm still with Al P on the stick in lieu of the auto.

The money racks up with the safety equipment. The car is $500, but that doesn't include rollcage, harnesses, fuel cell, suits, helmets etc. Could acutally get a bit expensive.

I have the CMC national champ on board for a team, AND just found a 95 Neon 5spd for $400 with a new clutch. I am going to get it tonight if I the guy emails me back. I have tubing the cage, a bender, a seat and harness. Figured costs including the car, brakes, gas, entry fees for 4 drivers, 2 sets of $99 discount tire deals, a timing belt and some hoses all in at $2100. divide that 4 ways and and we are pretty well on target. There are some cheap hotels at the track or just camp out, and they usually have a roach coach for food. I also already have the transponder for lap times/counts.
Neons only weigh 2300lbs and I bet I can get that down under 2k pretty easy. figuring gas mileage of only 12 mpg while on track and using Vatozone pads, might consider some EBC yellows if they are cheap.
$400-500 for 5 or 6 hours of track time, assuming it makes it, is a bargain!

That would be awesome but keep in mind, they can "take" the car at any point and crush it. Wouldn't want you to lose out on those parts if the car gets written off.
Funny thing is I am more interested in getting this effort going than to finish a few things on my race car for a february 9th event! :o

That's about what I figured per person for a 5-6 man team with all of the safety equipment. I saw that same car on CL too..... I've got a 3 guys for sure for my team and a couple of potential candidates.
I think it's going to be more about keeping the car together than it is being "fast". But please go ahead and build a screamer. A light, RWD, 6-4cyl, manual tranny car with good brakes would be the best imo. Of course, I just want to do it an try to finish.....

I'm a fan of getting a car and butchering the shit out of it to the point where it can get out of its own way. Most of the fox body cars can drop 1000 lbs. of weight without tearing out the dash.
You are right about the stick though, a lot of the junk cars that are stick shift are going to have an abused tranny and/or clutch. BUT most of the time if the tranny takes a shit you are still going to have select gears. Like in a T5 if the big expensive shaft takes a dump you still have 1st and 4th. Which could still win the day!!

Now that you chimed in...I have an idea.
How about a rental car! a couple days rental can't be but about $150, get the Loss Damage waiver, put a cage in it and cut it out when you are done.
Drop the car off and toss them the keys and say thanks!

I bet I could get that Neon down to 1600lbs pretty quick. After gutting doors, glass and every non essential piece of sheet metal, it would be fuggin' light! 132 hp might move it along pretty good and save the gas and a lot of wear and tear on the tires and brakes...although I am figuring on about 12mpg. Keep in mind that if you stay on track the entire 24hours, you could end up traveling about 1500 miles at this track. We run 1:44's down there and I am guessing you could get 2:15's to 2:20's out of a neon on street tires.
I just found tires for it at Discount for $25 ea and they have a tread wear of 420! Damn I wish this guy would call me back!

you guys need to read the rules completely. $500 for the car plus UP TO $500 for getting it running or performing better. You can sell off parts but you have to document the sales to the judges. For every $10 over that, you get penalized 1 lap.
I just wish this guy would contact me about the neon...the trailer/truck is ready to go get it!
If you are smart, you could recoup a lot of the costs from selling the airbags on some cars, window glass, window motors, locks, spare tire/jack combos....and ultimately the car for scrap at the end of the race!
Best plan is to find the running car first, then go from there to find the second set of wheels and other parts for safety.

The first thing that popped in my head was a turd gen F-bod and a hole saw.
But I'm sure I'll come up with something better.
LMAO at this:
WILL I DIE?
Maybe. Safety equipment isn't included in the $500 car-purchase price, so you'll have kind of a fighting chance. But this isn't a brilliant thing to be doing. Get used to it.
WILL MY CAR DIE?
Oh, almost definitely. And, even if it survives on the track, halfway through the race one entry will be chosen by popular ballot for immediate crushing. Could be yours. Heck, it probably WILL be yours. Be prepared.

HA! I just saw that:
2.2.1: Drivers Under 18: Drivers under 18 years of age must get a notarized letter of permission from their parents or legal guardians. You might also want to ask said parents or legal guardians why they'd ever allow you to do this; it probably means they've been poaching your college fund.
Jesus, it just gets better:
3.7: Fire-Retardant Clothing: SFI- or FIA-approved fire-retardant driving suits must be worn by all drivers at all times while inside the car. Just in case you're a really cheap bastard and you think you can get out of a burning car in, like, two seconds, single-layer 3.2/A1 suits will be accepted.

Think about that for a moment! with those 5 series brakes you will have to run a 16" or 17" wheel and tires are going to get expensive...not to mention brake pads..figure 3 or 4 sets of brakes and you will likely use atleast 2 and maybe 3 sets of tires in this event so be aware of the trickle down of costs. Also, if you get that 325 down to a flyshit weight...you won't need anything more than stock brakes with better pads.
Start thinking minimalist and not bonzai!!! Also, feel free to bounce ideas off me because with 5 years of track/racing experience, I have a lot of insight for success that you guys might not have! ;)
Also, take heart to the 1/2 way car destruction and the reality of being on track for an hour or more at a time. If you have 4 drivers, you want to make sure all 4 get to drive...boxing the car up in T1 in the first hour means a lighter trip home and a few buddies to remind you that they didn't get to drive.
I think I have the 3 other guys for our team and they are all AI/CMC drivers, one a national champ and the other a two time 3rd place guy. Conservation of equipment is going to be the key.
I really wish this guy with the neon would call me otherwise I am going to be on the prowel for a 3 series too!

Oh, I know, it was just a fun afterthought. No way in hell we're dropping $1200 on brakes for a $500 car... especially when it could be crushed at any moment. LOL!
Yeah, there will be a fine line between beating the fuck out of a POS and actually trying to keep it on the track for 24 hours. And we'll probably do driver rotations quick in the beginning. We're not that concerned with winning, just in it for the fun, and we do want everyone to get seat time.

Entry - 1100 (500 + 100/person)
Safety, brakes, tires - 1500

Figured costs including the car, brakes, gas, entry fees for 4 drivers, 2 sets of $99 discount tire deals, a timing belt and some hoses all in at $2100. divide that 4 ways and and we are pretty well on target.
The rules say that the total cost of the car cannot exceed $500, not that amount per driver....
Edit: Nevermind, I understand what you were getting at....
4.1: Total Investment in Vehicle Can Not Exceed $500: Except for items described in Rules 4.2 and 4.3, the total spent to purchase and prepare any car may not exceed $500.
4.1.1: Lame-Ass Rationalizations: Cars that "should be" worth $500 don't count; cars that "were worth $500" before you spent another $2000 to fix them don't count; cars you've owned for 20 years and spent more than $500 on during that time don't count; "it would have been worth $500 if it didn't already have a cage" doesn't count. Five hundred dollars means five hundred frickin' dollars.
4.2: Safety Equipment DOES NOT Count Toward $500 Total: Safety equipment described in Section 3 DOES NOT count toward the $500 total. There is NO LIMIT on safety-equipment spending. Tires, wheels, and brake components are also considered safety equipment and DO NOT count toward the $500 total. While not mandatory, additional safety items such as fuel cells and plumbed fire suppression systems are highly recommended and DO NOT count toward the $500 total. Exhaust systems aft of the header DO NOT count toward the $500 total.
4.3: Registration, Insurance, License DO NOT count Toward $500 Total: Registration, insurance, or license charges—assuming for some reason you bothered—DO NOT count toward the $500 total.
4.4: BSF Factor: To prevent cheating, all cars will be inspected by a panel appointed by the organizers. At that time, all teams will be given an opportunity to describe the car's purchase and prep. If the panel believes the limit set out in Rule 4.1 has been exceeded, it will assign a Bullshit Factor (BSF) equal to one BSF per ten dollars above the limit. The entry will be docked one lap for each BSF assigned. (Ten dollars = one BSF = one lap.) Entrants are encouraged to bring all supporting evidence and make up plausible-sounding stories in advance.
4.4.1: Appeal of BSF Panel Decisions: Get real. There's no appealing this decision. You're boned.
4.5: Sponsorships: Conned some hardworking corp into giving you parts or cash? Nice work, but it still counts toward the $500 total. We recommend blowing that sponsorship dough on other stuff instead--hotel rooms, gasoline, entry fees, pedicures, driver suits, personal male enhancement medication, travel expenses, Freudian therapy for the organizers...things like that.
4.6: Labor Costs: If you didn't pay for the labor, it doesn't count toward the $500 total. If you did pay for it, it does count toward the $500 total. This just ain't that complicated, guys.
4.7: Scavenger Sales: If you sell pieces off of your car, the money that comes back in can be used to offset the initial purchase price. Just be prepared to convince some exceedingly skeptical judges of the validity of all those transactions.

The rules say that the total cost of the car cannot exceed $500, not that amount per driver....
Brakes, wheels/tires and safety equipment do not count toward the $500 limit.

fyi for you guys that are interested keep in mind even though the car needs to be under $500, they charge $500 to enter your car in the race plus $100 per person and you will still need fire suit, gloves, helmet...
Yep, and for those of us that have all that already, this is cheap fun.
Most of the jackets, pants and helmets, shoes and gloves can be had cheap.
Also look for comfy seats because after 40 minutes my ass and back hurt..figure 6 hours in car over 24 hours and you are going to get the point. Don't forget about support equipment like fuel jugs and all too...

Well, I passed on the neons. They were just going to be too much work and too much shit to store for 8 months here at the house. I found an 86 300Z that had a lot of new stuff like clutch, shocks and springs and it ran. The guy was asking 700 for it but there wasn't much left to sell off of it to get back down to 500. I think he had some serious offers upwards of a grand and never got back to me.
There is a 240sx on there for 400 as a roller, looks straight and the suspension doesn't look jacked up but it has no wiring harness or motor...
I am just going to cruise the list to see what comes up. Keep in mind that you have to submit your team entry and won't know if you get selected until August. Apparently they turn folks away because of too many entries. Either way, you can always sell your car to someone that gets in so you wouldn't be out anything. Wait to do cages and prep work till after August so you don't waste money!

Yeah I saw them back on CL the other day. You wouldn't happen to be looking for another team member? My team kind of fizzled away because of a track day for the Lone Star BMW club the same weekend as this race. Two of the guys are on the commitee so they are out. :( They were really looking forward to it and I was hoping they would be able to go, but they have things to do that day for the event. I'll be honest, I don't have the name Schumacher anywhere in my family tree, but I do have a 4 door 2500 Ram, unlimited gas for the trip, and a 18ft car hauler. My driving experience is limited to a one day drivng school at TMS about a year ago.... :o

I have 7 guys in our race group here in Dallas that are wanting in. We may end up forming two teams. I know the B brothers sound like they are in with Al P, bsharer and a few others are interested.
I also wouldn't worry about track driving skills....they will likely put us on the 1 mile Kart track at MSRH and the best skill you can have in this event is accident avoidance so if you drive in Dallas traffic frequently, you might be just as skilled as us racers!

What about an old cop car? They are set up to have the crap run out of them with oil & tranny coolers, etc.
Again, my friend has a late nineties Grand Marquis with about 30k miles on it that's wrecked in the front. It doesn't appear to have frame damage, and nothing's leaking, so my idea was to sawzall as much body as possible off the car and weld a cage across the framerails for stability, since the cage doesn't count toward the cost. 10-point? 12-point? Full 25.5 cage? What's the prognosis, doc? The car is free to me with the title, and they want it gone, like yesterday. If anyone wants it, call me at (214) 478-0047. My name is Yale.

On the tranny cooler idea. On our dirt bomber car (big bodied Monte Carlo, has to run stock everything) we use an old A/C condenser as the tranny cooler. Lets us use LOTS more fluid than a regular cooler. That might help an auto tranny live a little longer for ya.

And as for the entry "application" they said that they havent had a big issue and had to turn a bunch of folks away. Get them in now, and it should be fine.

He probably called MSRH directly. Hey, Glenn keep your eyes open for a early 90's escort GT with a 5spd. Those POS have some decent brakes and move pretty good especially after we hack out all the bullshit. Plus I see tons of them at the pick and pull yards for extra parts. Before anyone dumps a bunch of money in to their turd, I heard a nasty rumor that you WILL NOT be able to "buy" a license at the track like at some of the other tracks. I've heard you have to have some sort of legitimate racing license to be able to race. Not sure why or anything, but just a tid bit of info.
I'd get on the horn and check. This came from a decently reliable source that knows MSR houston pretty well.

That's important info someone needs to check out. Maybe aggie97 can chime in here about what all is needed to get a provisional license at msr houston. Each venue has it's own set of rules to keep all the dipshits from killing each other. Would there be enough time to get another type of legit license before August and what all would be needed? NASA, SCCA, ???, what would work and which would be the easiest to get? They don't want guys running around balls out during a full course caution or pulling back onto the surface right in front of traffic. It's not a video game.... ;)

That's going to be a big deal breaker for 99% of the people in this thread...I would hold on spending any further money as of now. Blake, thanks for that info.
NASA comp licenses are somewhat difficult to get. you usually have to do atleast 4 drivers education events and you MIGHT get signed off for a provisional. the only other "license" that might be available would be a COMMA license from Hallet Motor Speedway but I have no info on that.
I suddenly get the impression that MSRH has figured out how much this event is going to trash their track with debris, torn up surface and generally a film of shit that will be nearly impossible to get off as well as make the track dangerous as hell. that's not to say they don't have a change of venue as there are a few other tracks that would be in for this around here...but things aren't looking good.
Stay tuned and I will see if I can find out as much information as I can from the contacts on the lemons site.
