Just an interesting historical footnote in Louisiana politics. And, perhaps, a sign of just how progressive our country has become.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Pledging to make a "clean break with the past" and root out corruption, Republican Bobby Jindal tried to separate himself from politics as usual as he was sworn in as Louisiana's governor Monday.

Jindal, the nation's first elected Indian-American chief executive and the state's first non-white governor since Reconstruction, thanked past governors for their service — but said it was time to rid the state of its reputation for corrupt government.

Progressive my ass. There is a former Klansmen as the president of the senate. He's 4th in line for the presidency, right behind Nancy Pelosi.

When Louisiana elects a black man or woman for Governor or to the U.S. Senate, then there will have been true progress forward in that state's political system.

When I first read the subject the first thing that came to mind was Richard Pryor.

He use to do a skit on the first black President. How all the backward ass hillbilllies voted for him as a joke and woke up the next day with, "He WON?"

He goes on about how he is giving a speeches and dodging multiple bullets as he gives the speech.

Funny shit. Alot funnier than reading this lame post.

Since I escaped from Louisiana I'll fill you in a bit.

For one Bobby Jindal is actually a pretty good guy and a fairly conservative Republican. He faced Gov. Blanco in a runoff back before Katrina hit. Jindal was expected to win easily but Bible thumpin' North Louisiana didn't vote for him as expected. Why? Because he wasn't white. Blanco became Governor and one year later the entire state regretted it. My Mom, who voted for Jindal in the 1st election, said that North Louisiana got exactly what it deserved (flooded with refugees) because they didn't vote for Bobby. Since then, Mom has escaped Louisiana for Florida.

In all honesty, if Katrina didn't happen, Blanco would have likely been easily re-elected. Other than Katrina, her record was pretty damn good. She did more to break up the good ole boy system in La than just about anyone else. There was a whole fiasco about riverboat pilots (a job that pays nearly half a million) those jobs are basically political payoffs in Louisiana. She helped kill that system. She also did a decent job of trying to stopping the job hemorrhaging around the state but there is only so much a Governor can do even disregarding Katrina.

Hopefully Jindal can fix a lot of the problems La still has. At least he doesn't have the blame for Katrina to hold him back and he can throw that at a lot of politicians that managed to survive the blowback of that storm..

It's funny, Mark Twain actually made more money being a riverboat captain than he did writing Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. At the time it was the second highest paying job in the country, right behind the president.

Now that is a good indicator of how our country has progressed.

Yeah, he's my new Governor. He turned around and saved the Department of Health and Hospitals (The Governing body of my Agency) back in the early late 90s that basically saved millions. So I know that he's a stickler for procedures and health issues. I'm watching to see what kinda of new policies he'll institute that will affect what I do.

All in all, I think he'll do a great job, if he can successfully end the corruption in this state.

By that standard you'd think that a B-2 pilot would be the highest paid person in America seeing as how they cost $2.1 billion each according to our defense budget. Not to mention what a nuclear payload would bring on the black market.

Pelosi is a bitch and Cindy Sheehan is running against her:)

That's fucking amazing to me! So many of the politicians in that state are corrupt, and all the people there do is keep voting them in. William Jefferson is a PERFECT example of this. It's OBVIOUS that this guy is corrupt, yet they voted him back in.

Why is Nagin hailed as a "hero", YET she's villified??? The idiot goes around spouting his mouth off, and begging for a government check. How about doing what you can do, BEFORE you beg for another government check! I've said it before and I'll say it again.... WHY didn't he evacuate the city?? Why is NO ONE, publicly asking this question???

Actually Nagin did order an evacuation of the city. Grant it may have come a day late but it was a day after he was briefed from Hurricane Center. I cant blame him to much because he could only work with what he had. He asked for additional resources from the Governor however the governor waited to send help 3 days afterwards.

Common, be honest, if you had a chance to fly a B-2 or F-22, you'd do it for free. :D

That is a valid point. However it is also valid that there were a ton of school buses he could have used and didn't.

Nagin deserves to be thrown under the bus with the rest of them. But in all honestly neither Nagin or Blanco's actions are nearly as bad as Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard. That cock sucker ordered the flood control pump operators to abandon their posts. They BEGGED him to let them stay and keep the pumps running. There were operators crying on the phone to let them SAVE New Orleans. He told them all to get out.

If Aaron Broussard didn't order the abandonment of those pumps, we wouldn't have had a fiasco on the scale that Katrina was. That fucker seriously needs a kick in the nuts.

All of this shit makes me dubious of anyone getting elected as a reformer in Louisiana. Back in the '70's, my mom's whole family lived in Baton Rouge, and my mother's then 19yo cousin was running around with Edwin Edwards, and he called my grandmother's house looking for her. She told him if he wanted to take her out again, he'd have to deal with granny's foot in his ass. We stayed poor.

Yea, EWE is a real jackass. He gives the rest of us coonasses a real bad taste in our mouths. Too bad for the family he came from. The Edwards were known as good people before he got really active in politics.

Reform in Louisiana is just plain difficult because so many politicians are part of the problem. Roemer and Foster ran as reformers but never got a whole lot accomplished. People wonder how someone like David Duke can be a serious contender for the Governorship. Well when your desperate, you start thinking crazy. Fortunately there was just enough sanity to keep that motherfucker out.
