View Full Version : Great Quote from Ex Pres Clinton
"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'IS' is".
That's almost as good as his buddy's "I invented the internet".
Say all you want about "I am not a crook" and "OK, I am now in charge of the White House".

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'IS' is".
or how about:
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms Lewinsky."
Getting a blowjob is considered a sexual relation by most people.
or how about:
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms Lewinsky."
Getting a blowjob is considered a sexual relation by most people.
Did you notice the long pause he gave between "that woman" and Ms. Lewinsky" as if he could later argue "that woman" wasn't necessarily Ms. Lewinsky. But then again, it all depends on what the meaning of the word "IS" is.

I just kind of figured he was trying to narrow down which of his past conquests they were referring to, and it took him a minute to come up with a name :)

He was also pointing specifically at a person in the audience.

Al Gore never claimed he invented the internet. That is one of the biggest misnomers in pop culture. It's just something for misguided people like yourself to say in a vein attempt to elicit a like minded uniformed response.

I just don't see how you explain around a comment like this regardless of snopes. In his mind he assisted with creating the "internet buzz", which I submit would have happened with or without his "assistance". Darpanet existed long before gore was in office, and was built from ideas from men a lot smarter and forward looking than gore ever could dream of being (Tim Berners-Lee). Gore was trying to latch onto the glory of men that had already done the hard work.

Geez...I was trying to keep it simple, but if you want to elaborate on this topic, I will. ;)
I'm sorry to be the one to inform you, but Al Gore's Congressional Work and the Gore Bill laid down the ground work for a publicly accessible communications network i.e. "Information Superhighway", "Internet"
The Gore Bill resulted in the development and creation of Mosaic. Mosaic is the browser that got the internet started in it's infancy. Al Gore has been talking about the framework and the need for this type of communication medium since before most of people on this site were born.
Finally...
If you read the snopes report, it clearly debunks the BS myth that Al Gore claimed that he invented the internet. Regardless of what he said, his political contributions to this technology are well documented. He does have a great deal invested in getting the Internet started from a political standpoint. And he also did a great job of marketing the internet through his political rhetoric in the early 90's.
Leonard Kleinrock who created ARPANET, has said that Gore and his Gore Bill was an important piece to the history of the internet.
So, you can continue to decry and bemoan all things liberal. I'll stick with the truth. And the truth is that Al Gore's contributions to the internet are significant and even pivotal. He did not invent the technology, but he was one of the chief architects and making this happen politically.
And the man has a Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar sitting on his mantle. It doesn't mean two shits what you or I have to say anyway. It doesn't take away from his achievements because you disagree.
Carry on.....

Gore passed legislation that helped move arpanet along (arpanet created in 1969) in 1988. Gee, that's 17 years later. Granted, there is no doubt that the bill helped hasten the growth of the internet, but the hard work of many other people before 1988 set the whole thing in motion. Guys like vince cerf's early work in 1970, the universities that were being connected in 1971, ray tomlinson's e-mail creation in 1972, bob metcalfe (3-com) creating ethernet in 1973, name server creation in 1983, DNS in 1984, MX records created by craig partridge in 1986 to allow inter host e-mail exchange, and so on. The internet as we know it today was well on it's way before gores bill in 1988 gave it a nudge.

Reading comprehension owns you.
Take another look at my statement regarding ARPANET. Leonard Kleinrock gave credit to Al Gore being an important role in the history of the internet. Nowhere in my statement does it say that Al Gore helped move ARPANET along.
You make this too easy. I don't even have to make an effort to debunk the BS anymore. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

oh really?
arpanet = roots of modern day internet.
The modern day internet would not exist if the early work in arpanet had not been done. You know, little things like TCP/IP and HTTP, DNS, DHCP.

good boy.
i think you are missing the point. if it was for the gore bill and similar legislation we wouldn't have a publicly accessible internet.
you are arguing technology and i'm talking about the political realities of the internet.
you misread what i said just a few minutes ago and now you are talking about internet protocol. your point is not in context with my argument.
bottom line here is that you can try to equivocate and downplay al gore's role in the internet to your hearts content. history paints a different picture, especially the political catalyst that paved the way towards a public internet. it's the politics and mighty pen that made this a reality. whatever you wish to think to the contrary is fine with me. it doesn't mean anything at the end of the day.
And your praise of ARPANET is kind of humorous considering the people behind it have credited Al Gore's contributions being instrumental to making the internet politically viable.

I gave your boy gore credit for recognizing the next hot thing and jumping aboard with the "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." statement. He passed some legislation; big deal - the internet was doing just fine on it's own, and gore is standing (stomping?) on the shoulders of internet giants that i've already previously named who did the hard work. It has been acknowledged that gore's bill helped in some ways. I remember the late 80's when this bill passed and the internet was already quite alive and well, mostly within the university realm, but starting to spill over into the business world. The hot thing was to have an e-mail address on your business card, and this was before "ISP" so you had to have a university account login to even access the internet directly. There was even a hot project called "linux" that was afoot at the time; it fit on 11 360k floppy disks.

MM2000 wants me to acknowledge that with a stroke of a pen gore single handedly boosted the modern internet into being. While his bill probably did help provide a financial incentive, all he did was accelerate something that was already blossoming all by itself. I was there in the late 80s and saw it myself. The reason that the internet was budding was because of the stellar work and forward vision of guys like vincent cerf that created the powerful basic capabilities of the internet long before gore got involved.
MM2000's example of the mosaic browser powered by gore's pen ignores the basic technologies already created that it was built upon, like the HTTP protocol, sockets, TCP/IP, and of course there had to be a web server there in the background somewhere that "someone" already designed and wrote. These capabilities enabled marc andresson to create mosaic in the first place.
Gore's statement is quite insulting IMO to those that spent the long hours to come up with the internet's basic capabilities and made them work, when he only wielded a pen to sign legislation.

Yes, I can definitely see your point. The first I remember of anything that resembled the internet was "Gopher", so named after the University of Minnesota, my freshman year of college. We were blown away. I seriously wonder sometimes what happened to that.
