i have a large in ground pool and i was wondering if anyone does anything to their pool for freezing weather that we are fixing to have.
this is my first pool and i really have no freaking clue, other than its cold as hell in the water and i can swim, no heater for the pool :mad:

You don't need to worry unless it's gets REALLY cold. When the surface starts to freeze, it's important to not let it get across the pool. It can crack the tile surround if this happens. It usually takes several days of single-digit temps to do this in Texas. Be sure and run the Polaris (or whatever sweeper you have).

I've got a waterfall from the hot tub into the pool that is enough to keep it from freezing with our weather.

That, and keeping the Mouse or whatever you want to call it running will keep it from freezing.

It'd take some really low temps here to freeze pool water that has any sort of motion in it.

hopefully your pump has a freeze protector, it should come on automatically when the temp hits 32.

That's true too. Mine will run once the temp gets cold enough to keep the lines from freezing.

It's too dang cold to swim anyway. You only have to run the pump 2-3 hours a day and if you shock the pool before you cover it, you will not need to add chemicals the rest of the time it's covered. Also when swim season is starting you just uncover the pool and jump in....no leaves or scrubbing.....but that's just my opinion. :D

If you have a freeze guard, make sure that it is working. They can fail, and if the pump freezes, it inst fun.

Run the pump when the temp gets close to freezing. It is better to have it running 24/7 in freezing temps than off. We wont see a temp that will allow the pool water to freeze, the ground stays very warm and the recirculating water wont freeze. Cover your pool to keep it clean, and test the water once or twice a month. If the pool is uncovered or the cover is translucent, you will still loose chlorine, just at a slower rate.

If it is an updated pool (within the last 5 yrs), you should have somehting called freeze protection. Check if yours automatically runs when the temperature gets 33*F and below. That is what happens with mine, it is salt water.
