Any got'chas? Anything complicated? It seems like I would just screw on a 3-piece frame. Two sides and one top. Then attach the door via the hinge. Is it that simple?

Depending on the current door depth you may have to add a subframe to it. This would require just a set of 2X4s or a 1X3 I would use Hardi backer studs as they will not rot unless it is under an enclosed porch then any treated wood should work. Jut paint it to match the exterior trim color.

Make sure you have room for the latch mechanism and the door sweep at the bottom.

I'm worried about the door not aligning right. Is that not a common issue?

What I'd do is before buying the door...just stand in the book section at HD and read up on how to do it. :)

I too would be worried about alignment and also make suring it seals ok.

As long as the door frame you are attaching it to is plumb, you should be fine. Actually, on a storm door prob not that big a deal since most will have a closer cylinder to draw it closed.

I've installed several. I just installed a new Larson late last year, was a very heavy door, full glass, well made. Has two closer cylinders, one on top and one on bottom. Read the instructions. I didnt have to shim anything and the door mated well with all the felt seals on the frame.

yeah a friend or two will help. i had my front door replaced by a couple friends and we had to ad a sub frame to make the storm door fit. as far as alignment was kinda tricky but thats because my house i crooked lol then again it was built in the 30's

Why do the call them storm doors? During a storm, that would be the last door I would stand behind.

My understanding is the name came because of the protection it offers the front door during a rain storm.

As far as intallation, it is pretty simple, you just need a 2 and 6 foot level, a drill, and a hacksaw. Make sure to check your rough opening size befoe you install it. I have installed over 30 of them and sometimes they are simple and sometimes you run into problems if the house has shifted. You also may have to fur out your door to 1/1/8 inch away from the existing door jamb depending on what brand of door you go with. Larson is a good brand and so are anderson.
