"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.

A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old.

So, what does this really mean? Will there really be a Lakota country in the middle of the USA?

Good luck with dat!

Oppression at the hands of the US government has taken its toll on the Lakota, whose men have one of the shortest life expectancies -- less than 44 years -- in the world.

Lakota teen suicides are 150 percent above the norm for the United States; infant mortality is five times higher than the US average; and unemployment is rife, according to the Lakota freedom movement's website

Not a great way to start a new nation.

Pretty sure the United States isn't gonna just stand there and let some bunch of renegades secede and set up their own little country.

Sounds like a step in the right direction!

Did someone cut off their supply of Jack Daniels?

How many people are we talking about here? How much land will this consume? Is there really much that could be done to stop this? Will it affect the Nation in a negative way?

It's time for Texas to leave the union. Since Oklahoma is the northernmost county of Texas, that's going too...

70k in Lakota country, double that if they can get the rest of the Sioux nation to follow their lead. Not much land at all.

I say let them do it then. Let them fend for themselves. That way if they don't make it, then well at least they tried. If they do make it, then good for us for letting them succeed in life. If there is zero to minimal negative effect on us then no problem.

It will never happen. There are simply too many logistical problems, and our politicians will not allow this to stand as it would/could be viewed a result of their incompetencies...

Didn't look at it that way. You're probably right about that.

If they procede cut them off completely like a spoiled kid that needs to learn a lesson, then sue them for 150 years worth of free rent, medical, food, and everything else that Indians get.

besides, as you might not see it as a problem now with this small group, it sets a dangerous precident that would most certainly be exploited.

I'm going to start my own county that way after I build my palace, squander all my resources and do some sabre rattling I can look forward to the US bailing out my starving ass with working America's hard earned confiscated tax money while at the same time opposing everything at the UN that benefits America. http://www.dfwstangs.net/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Have you ever seen the movie "The Mouse That Roared" starring Peter Sellers? It is a comedic spin on a similar principle.

i think the thinking here is that it could become a hotbed for terrorists, in theory, although I'm not sure how they'd get in.

but it'd sure be damn funny to block them off from the outside world into their one little country and see how long they'd last :D
