Third Day and Jars of Clay Christmas Concert

I went to the Third Day and Jars of Clay Christmas concert in San Antonio. The performances were great and they raised a lot of money (I hope) for the Blood:Water Ministry. This is a charity raising money to dig clean wells in Africa.

I recommend people catch the show if they can.

Of course, being a Roman Catholic at the event I found some things interesting such as:

1. Lexus had two white cars as you enter the assembly hall with red bows like in their Christmas commercials. I believe this was an arrangement with Community Bible Church and not the bands. I kinda had visions of the money changers in the temple.

2. In the Third Day song Creed, they are singing the Apostles Creed which Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Episcopalians and others all pray. I find it interesting that they removed the word “catholic” (notice small c and not capital C) from the line “the holy catholic Church.” Must we dumb down our prayers for fear people might not know that catholic means universal?

3. It was interesting that they remove a word from the Apostles' Creed but we sang "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" which is from Pope Telesphorus in the 2nd Century. They sang it in the song Angels We Have Heard on High", but that line is in there because it is a Latin prayer orignially written for Christmas.

I have been "in the biz" for about 12 years. It is really hard to decide how not to offend people and at the same time minister to everyone. There is ALWAYS someone who is going to be offended at whatever you do, regardless of what it is. We run into this when dealing with churches as well. Some want to deal with only protestant churches, some with others. It is all based on what doctrines some do or don't believe. Basically, it is ridiculous.

Yah, seeing a couple of cars like that would have made me feel that way too. The main reason they do that is that it usually means that a car dealership had sponsored the event in some way and were trading out a little advertisement as part of the deal. I bet if you look on a poster of the event, there is a large lexus dealership that was sponsoring it.
