when you filp the switch all you hear is a humm from the motor. i got underneath it and after unplugging it i tried to turn it with the little key(pretty much just an allen wrench). i turned it hard enough to where it started moving the adapter where it connects to the sink so i stopped. i tried turning the other way but it still would not budge. are they pretty easy to take apart? i'm guessing something got in there and jammed it all up.
thanks

Not much to em. There's a real coarse threaded ring at the top. Once you get that off, you'll see the spindle that holds the blades on. Take that loose and whatever's got it jammed will probably fall out.
Shoving a wooden broom handle or stick through the opening up top and twisting with it might give you the leverage you need to get it to break free without turning the whole unit.
<- laughing at the whole reset button comment. Hello! It makes noise?? :p

There's allen head bolt on the bottom (under the sink), use it to free it. I have to do my every now and then because it is so rusted from using bleach to clen my white POS sink.

Yes try the broom handle trick. It works!

I never tried the broom handle approach but I've used a long screwdriver to force the thing to turn. Sometimes a seed or a bone fragment will get lodged in there and you just have to turn that thing with force to bust it free.

x2...my garbage disposal likes to lock up if I'm out of town or don't use it for a few weeks...just free it up with an allen wrench

It's easy to remove, and then you can actually see the inside of it.90% of the time, something is jammed it there.

I had a pebble jam mine up one time. Had to knock the shit out of the thing with a screwdriver to get it loose.

FYI You can buy an new one at home depot for around 50 bucks. The stink that comes from a disposer is enough to keep me from ever fucking with fixing them. :o

No kidding. One of the worst things I've ever smelled in my life when I took out the old disposal at the condo.

I've always used a large prybar to dislodge the blades... here's a good writeup on cleaning them.

Exactly how you unlock a jammed disposal. Just becareful because some times you might loosen a pipe underneath and have a leak so check it before turning the water on for any period of time.
