My Mom is learning to use the computer and internet and it would help me greatly if I could view her screen and work her computer from my house. Is that a fairly simple thing to do ?

RealVNC is a cheap/free solution. Prob not the most secure thing in the world but its done the trick for me for exactly the application you describe for years.

Is there a monthly fee or a one time fee? I went to gotomy website, but did not feel like filling out the form with my email address to find out the price. (hates junk mail)

Start > Run > conf

Will need an IP to connect.
Start > Run > ipconfig

use vnc server/client its free
