View Full Version : Rifle question

Some of you might have heard that there is a park in Plano in which coyotes are eating pets. I live really close to this park. I belive my pet was attacked by one of these animals. Don't worry, it was merely a puncture wound, and he is healing nicely. I really do not want to worry about these animals around here, so here is my question. Can I legally walk around with a loaded rifle? I mean, if it is legal to do so, and I "happen" to encounter one of these animals, and I "only" fired the rifle for my protection during one of my morning walks, would I get in trouble if caught?
Is this situation even feasable? Am I better off getting a CHL to kill the fucking coyotes? What are the laws dictating the use of rifles? BTW it would be an old Winchester 25-35.

You want to walk around a city park with a loaded rifle?
Good luck with that. ;) And don't drop the soap.

legal to carry yes assuming your not alarming the public (which it probably does alarm them). As for firing it i dont remember what the penal code is but im sure it would be illegal due to being in the city limits. There are certain parts of the county where we get calls for people shooting guns all the time and can't do anything about it because county laws say you can shoot your guns in uncorporated areas.
i would get the CHL and carry but you better be a damn good shot to hit an animal that size thats running. Besides if you get the CHL you can walk around almost anywhere with it :).

I am a great shot, but it looks like I might have to use a bow and arrow, or some sort of trap. I thought about traps, but I do not want to accidentally capture a neighbour's pet.

oh im a great shot too but with a pistol its going to be tough as hell since it's not going to get that close to you. With the bow and trap im sure you'll be in the same legal status as the rifle/shotgun. Still going to be illegal if the public feels your threatining.

Can you open carry a bow? I doubt many people would be alarmed by it, and with the right arrow head you could tear a coyote a new one.

shiet if i were driving around and saw some fool carrying a bow i would be stopping them immediatly. i doubt i would concider charging them with anything but i would definatly want to know whats up with that lol. besides im pretty sure bow falls under the same catagory with shotgun/rifle in some form or fashion though i might be wrong.

Its not illegal to carry a bow and arrows. They are not "Fire Arms" and there are no laws against it.
Hell, I went out target practicing with a compound bow in a field in the city limits. (I called the cops first to ask if there were any laws against it.) Absolutely None. Even the cop said becareful with it and good luck with upcoming bow hunting.

What will probably happen is when hes carrying his bow trying to be Wylie Coyote someone with a CHL is going to put some lead in his apple when they see him draw that thing.

I hear ya
Of course, If I was open carrying a bow and saw an officer drive by, I would have no problem explaining myself. Nothing to hide really.

Ask the city of Plano for a large trap and tell them it's to collect rodents. You are expected to turn over the animals but what the hell do they know if you "relocate" the coyote?
city of plano won't do shit because there are dickheads that live there that are fighting to protect them. ANY shot used against them will be prosecuted, even BB guns. I have already been down this route 2 years ago. City won't even Tranq the fuckers because they said they can't legally shoot a dart gun in the city limits!! I had to apologize for laughing in their face on that one!
There may even be a specific municipal rule about hunting in the incorporated areas. I'd say you've been seeing stray dogs and borrow a large live trap from animal control.
