If it springs open into a hard object does it stop?
i had an old "switchblade" that did that.. wouldn't even prick thru the skin on your finger.

I believe it does, but I'm not going to find out... it accelerates the wear on the pawl when you do that. I know the Microtechs do that. I looked at some Microtechs, and they're sweet-ass, but didn't like the action on them as much as the Benchmade.
I'll admit, I'm a butterfly whore :o

It would have to be one hell of a spring, Id think, for the blade to keep going and puncture anything.

Ive had a shitload of switchblades and I dont get the feeling any of them would have punctured much less than a balloon.
But switchblades arent banned, you can buy and own them. Just you better have a damned good reason to be carrying it.

Automatic knives are illegal to sell in Texas.
Take a look at the CHL rules and regs.
On the other hand, the Boker Kalashnikov is pretty nice.
Solid German construction with AUS 8 stainless steel for 35$.

It also says it's defense of prosecution if an antique or curio or as collectors pieces.

Here is a good page that compiles some of the laws regarding auto knives.
http://www.gunsforsale.com/switchblade.htm
Don't get me wrong, I think auto knives are great.
They are quite handy when you have need of a knife and both hands aren't free.
Not sure how they are more of a danger than a regular folder or even a fixed blade, other than operator error. All of them will show up in a metal detector.

I don't carry a double edged, OTF pig sticker!
I used to carry a mini-reflex... never had a problem, but it WAS illegal to do so. It's such a crock though... my assisted open Kershaw is just as fast to open
I've pretty much stopped carying an auto since I started rolling w/ a pistol in the truck.
Love 'em though! There's something so satisfying about pushing a button and having sharp steel be exposed :D

Here's an all titanium frame(less hardware) folder by Martin Knives outta Caddo. The blade is S30V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPM_S30V_steel) steel. He made it for my friend while he waited.
Here's the site for Martin Knives. (http://www.martinknives.com/FOLDERS.html)
