New floors and counter tops. I'll see if I can dig up any of the before pic's. If not, picture nasty linoleum and cheep junk ass fomica (sp) counter tops. :rolleyes:

Saved myself around two grand doing it myself with the tile. Would have loved one solid piece but i'm a tightwad. ;)

did you pull up the formica or just tile over it. I didn't think it would hold up in the long run if you just tile over it.

in the process of doing the same thing....we will be going with a full slab instead of the tiles. also going with a solid oak hand distressed floor. hope to have it done by xmas.
how many sq/ft of countertop space did you have? and if you dont mind me asking, how much did it cost? just trying to see about how much cheaper it actually is.

I saved that page... my parents just got new appliances and are wanting to re-do their countertops as well. I've been trying to convince them to not go with the pricey slab and i think the pics you posted and the link will persuade them

The tile looks good i like it, its kinda different you usally just see slab thats whats in my new house, but hey if it saved you 2 grand and still looks good you cant go wrong with it.

Good looking pups you've got there. I've never seen a free standing type of oven like that as well as an open stove top. Usually they are under some sort of range, I like it though. Was the kitchen built like that or did you have to tear out wall?

Those countertops do look good. The prefabbed bullnosed granite countertops can be had about 30-50% cheaper than the raw slab solution. Less choices in species but several popular varieties available.
Am thinking about doing my parents kitchen. Will easily be under $800. To illustrate, see below. They are double thickness at the bullnose so they look like 1.5" thk when installed. These are std depth and 8ft lengths and sell for around $250ea. Hire an installer to fit and cut the countertops and cut your sink and faucet holes and voila! its done. My installer charged $175 to install 3 sections and cut and polish sink hole.

We did the same thing in our kitchen with the tile from Floor & Decor. We laid about 50sqft of granite tile and spent less than $500 on the materials. We tore off the old formica and screwed and glued together 3 sheets of 3/4" plywood plus the concrete board as the base. I can jump my 300lb ass on the counters and they won't budge. They actually say that you only need two sheets of 5/8" plywood screwed and glued together plus the concrete board, but we wanted to mount a bigger tile for the edges instead of the bullnose pieces that you got. Now I wish that we had done the bullnose or made my own. We also used a dime for the spacers and and filled the gaps with the epoxy grout until they were flush. The grout is almost the same color as the granite so you can hardly see it.

We *Almost* went with wood, but after doing some reading, figured it wouldn't work very well for our needs. Wood is really too soft for a dog slip and slide.
70 Sq ft., just over $600 in materials, including the Travertine on the backsplash. The first quote we reveived for a solid slab was $5,000. The quote we received for someone else to do the granite tile was about $2,500.
As far as I'm aware, the house was built that way, but it did have a remodel at some point. No walls were harmed in our particular re-do.
They are both Siberian Huskies, but we're pretty sure the one in back has wolf hybrid somewhere in her lineage.
And they are BAD.
And hairy.
And the one sneezes snot all over.
But that's really outside the scope of this particular thread.

THe only issues I have noticed with the tile, is the grout issues, it comes out, stains and you cant slide glasses over it cause they stick!
Its a pain to keep clean... However, you can save money by doing tile,

It's actually been a GODSEND. I do a pretty large amount of cooking, and I'm not the cleanest person in the world about it. :D
Before I had to use comet on my countertops every day to get rid of stains. Juice, tea, EVERYTHING was a pain in the ass to remove. Lots of water, cleaner, marinara, grease, cheese, etc. has been melted, smeared, and left overnight on the new countertops with no issues. Just a quick wipe. Maybe leave the cleaner on a little longer to get up whatever goober I missed the night before.
And I don't think I've ever slid anything on my countertops IN MY LIFE. I'm not sure I even considered that as a factor in my choice, LOL!

Floor and decor sells the slab pieces. It looks pretty neat, I may have considered them if I hadn't already ordered and had my slabs installed priot to going there to buy all the travertine and slate.
Also, for those that are redoing bathrooms counters they have pre-fabbed slabs with sinks and backsplashes in the standard sizes for less than $200. Very good deals....if they would have worked for me I would have saved a *TON* of money over the slabs we sued in the bathrooms. I will likely use them upstairs when I re-do that bathroom in the Spring.
