Hence the name "442"...400 ci., 4 sp., dual exhaust. It used to mean that when I was a kid.

That's what it means...that's what Olds intended it to mean.

That was pre-400 cars, like '65's, then 67 400's I think. Then '67-69 cars meant 400-4speed-dual exhaust, then it was 4-barrel-4spd-dual again when the 455 became an option after the '69 Hurst/Olds opened the midsize cars up to the big boy engines, because '70 saw 455's in regular trimmed mid-sized cars from BOP, as well as 454's in Chevelles. This had only happened with COPO stuff in '69, apart from the H/O.

That's what I remember, also. Olds used it for whatever was handy. They still called the auto's 442's, so the 4 speed was "optional".

The car looks awesome. I saw it before the detailing and the improvement in appearance is incredible. I like the color and the fact that it is a post car.

In 1964 442 stood for 4 barrel, 4 speed, and dual exhaust as they came with a 330 c.i. engine and an automatic was not an option. Automatics were available in 1965 so the original designation had to be changed.

Too bad the 68 - 69 Olds 400 was such a boat anchor. Under square with a heavy rotating assembly and shrouded valves due to too small a bore. A 455 or 425 bolts right in though and runs a lot better.

I guess everyone is forgetting the "4 cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder, 2 camshafts" cars in the early '90s. :D

I hope he's got a commercial fire extinguisher system in there. I remember a few years ago when Reggie Jackson's (?) nice collection was pretty much destroyed by a fire.
