drywall tape

what do you guy's use more often? fiberglass tape or papertape? also what works better premixed joint compound or mixing the mud on your own? i recently removed a door and installed a wall and you can see two of the lines from where i taped and its started to bubble up. i was reading online and it said i probably smoothed it out too hard but i was thinking of using the fiberglass tape this time and was just curious what others experience with it was.

I have never used fiberglass, I always used paper. If it was a corner, I used the expanded metal and paper taped over it.

I'm just the opposite. I prefer fiberglass. Texas is an area where mold is to common. Mold eats paper. The less the better.

My next house won't use paper backed drywall. I'm going to insist it has the new fiberglass based drywall..

did you find this easier to install? just bought 3 rolls of it. 6in by 25 feet just incase i wanna use some later down the line. only like 9 bucks.

I saw a show on DIY network about drywall... the contractors proffered fiberglass tape over paper. They had 4-5 contractors all talking about drywall

All the repair we made at the new house was with fiberglass tape. I prefer it to paper.

I also use the pre-mixed mud/joint compound but it depends on how big the job is.

yeah looks like i should have gone with this stuff to begin with. its a very small project i just didn't know what i was doing with the paper tape and should have started something smaller if i was going to go with that.

When you use fiberglass tape you have 1 less step.

Try the light wieght mud it sand a lot easyer (sp) it's in the blue box.

Fiber glass tape it the best. If you have to dig out the old tape, you "might" still have to float the void with a little mud.

If you are in a hurry, you can use the quick set mud in the bag. There is a 20 minute and a 90 minute sold at Home Depot. I like the 20 minute. Quick set mud is also easy to sand and it cuts your dry time by far. But do all your texturing with the USG Light Weight, also sold at Home Depot. The Regular mud is cheaper, but it shrinks too much as the Light Weight shrinks very little.

Apparently you are using the wrong quickset. In fact, I used some 20 minute today on three patches. It sanded every bit as easy as the USG light weight does.

And just a little hint to ya, if you use the USG Sheetrock Brand Quickset...look at the label. It says, "easy sand". ;)
