View Full Version : WOOT! I got an M1 carbine today!
I'm sure I didn't get the best deal ever, but I got a pretty decent M1 carbine for $300 with a spare mag. I don't even know what these are worth, but I saw it, and had the money, so boom, a new to me M1. Pics will follow.

USGI? Universal? Auto-Ordinance? etc...
If its a USGI version, what brand? Those generally go for 500+ now.
Universals go pretty cheap these days.
Auto-Ordinances go for about 400-500 new.
The stock is beat up, and looks to be birchwood, and the bolt is a little stiff to pull back, but closes fine. The bolt hold open button works, and it's a flat-bolt gun.
The receiver says it was made in Brownwood, Tx, and it doesn't have a little push safety like the USGI stuff, it's a flip safety next to the trigger on the right. Anyone more familiar with these things? I'm thinking I'm going to find a choate folding stock and fulton armory has a metal upper hand guard that doubles as a picatinny rail. Red dot or 4x?

Meets me who made it.
But on the safety, the army switched to the flip safety towards the mid -late orders. Simply because the mag release and push button safety's were often confused.
Another weird thing, and I may be wrong on this, but I think the peep sight was replaced with a fixed ghost ring. That would normally be pretty cool, but I don't like the fixed part of the equation. Does anyone make an adjustable ghost ring setup for these, or one that's easily adaptable? I found a folding stock I like better than the Choate on UltiMAK's website, and I think I'm gonna go with that upper handguard with the integral 1913 rail. Just bought the last two boxes of .30 carbine at Wal-Mart, and I'm gonna pick up the other last two at another store tomorrow. I would hit up the last one in town, but they have pissed me off to no end. If you want shitty shitty customer service, by all means go to Pidgeon Road Sporting Goods/Shooting Range in Stephenville, Texas. Jerks.
EDIT: It has the early style L-peep sight. Lame. Should I scour E-Bay for an original adjustable model, or try to find a good aftermarket alternative?

I personally would restore it to 1940's condition. Theres just something about the old world war 2 rifles that give it some character.
M1 carbines are not a very powerful hunting rifle, so I would just get it for "Plinking" and as a collection piece.
If you want a folding stock, I would get the paratrooper stock (Replica). Cheaper than dirt sells them. If you keep the stock military style stock, I would put the ammo pouches on the side, and buy the flash hider/muzzlebreak for it. Plus the original bayonet and sling for the rifle.
Magazines are cheep for the gun, but note, that most of the Original Magazines will be 10/15 rounders. 30 rounders are 99.9% aftermarket. Very few 30 rounders from the Korean Conflict has made it to the surplus market.
Also note, be very careful when you buy aftermarket parts for the M1 Carbine. If you do have a USGI M1 Carbine, buy only USGI Parts. The aftermarket M1 Carbine parts do not interchange easily.

M1 Carbine's rock! My dad has one. He bought it close to 15 years ago (I think he still has the price tag somewhere) from a gun store that has since closed down in Oak Cliff. Wanna say he paid around $125-150. Got some 15 and 30 round magazines and I just bought a couple hundred round of FMJ to hit up the range with soon. The Carbine is even smaller than my Daisy BB gun
