I'm doing my first, on LVMS's 1.8 mile classic course. Only thing i'm uncomfortable with, is that it's 8/10 right handed turns.. lol i wish they'd let me run it backwards.
it'll be my first time on a track, period... so i'm registered for L1. If i turn a laptime of faster than 1.51, i get bumped to l2. Not stoked about l1, passing only outside and on the straights...

I was the same way with right handed turns. I drug left knee way before the right knee but you will eventually get it down!

You can catch a track day at MSR Cresson, MSR Houston, TMS, TWS, Oak Hill, and a little more of a stretch at Hallet near Tulsa Oklahoma.

The first time was so cool and not what I expected, I stayed out there all day braking deeper, cornering faster, I loved just leaving my knee on the ground.

My first one they made me run in a beginner group, I had probably been street riding over 20K miles at the time. Passing was on the straights only. The first session annoyed the shit out of me, I was on an F3 with no 2nd gear and stuck behind some faggot on an R1. I coldn't lap worth a fuck because we had to CRAWL through the god damned corners, then he would blast the fuck out of them down the straight. He braked really early, but I couldn't get around him in time. I think I could have done it with 2nd gear, but lugging out in 3rd wasn't going to happen.
This jerk would N-E-V-E-R let me by (because I'm sure he was completely unaware of what was going on) and they wouldn't bump me because my lap times weren't quick enough (because of sluggo in front of me)
That was a lot of money to me at the time and I wasn't going to waste it. The next session I said FUCK YOU and was diving under every group of riders I approached. It was kind of cool doing laps with people waving flags the same color as your bike at every corner, BLACK LOL :p
I got bumped up after that, well, after a stern talking to, I tried to tell 'em more than once before that, fuck 'em.

When I lived in Atlanta and worked for Delta, I bought a new '92 GSX-R750. Back then, you got a free session with Team Suzuki Endurance at their Advanced Rider's School. I had ridden since I was 11 years old, and thought I knew what fast was. (I had an '87 GPZ-750R in Gemany for a couple of years!!!) Anyway, after learning a few things, I started hounding Wes Cooley on a stone stock GSX-R750 to the point he crashed right in front of me. I rode right between him and his bike! I was hooked from then on. I have since taken 5 racing schools, and gotten faster each time.
I used to go to Talledega GPR for the Southeastern Sportbike Association's track days with my gixer in '92. After getting a job as a tech inspector for them, I got a job in '93 as a Tech Inspector for WERA's Southeast region. That allowed me to enter one race free, and a second for half the normal entry fee. After realizing I needed more experience before I could use all of that bike, I started racing a sick-modded GS500E in Formula Clubman, Unlimited Twins, and Vintage 5. I even ran a few endurance races with some friends. I got to race at Road Atlanta (Before they filled in Gravity Cavity. I could tell some stories about that place!!!), Telladega GPR, Memphis Motorsports Park, Roebling Road, Rockingham, IRP, and Summit Point.
For all of '94, I never finished lower than 3rd in Formula Clubman, and was leading the Grand National Finals by a huge margin when the engine failed. I still finished 4th!!! I ended up as Chief Tech Inspector for WERA's Southeast region, ran the Tech/Safety crew at the Grand National Finals, and was an on-track instructor for Ed Bargy's Racing School. Not bad gigs for a 30+ year old!
I have slowed way down on the street since I started racing, and recommend track days to anyone that rides. You can learn a whole lot more about the abilities of your bike, and yourself. It will also teach you about how to properly setup your bike, which most street bikes rarely are.
I currently have a very clean '99 TL-1000R (16k miles) and a new, '04 Rune. The TL-R is for sale. :D
