View Full Version : Trouble breathing through nose during cardio

When I'm running/biking/whatever, if I try to breathe through my nose, it seems extremely labored. Is this normal? It's kind of like being stuffed up, but not enough that I can't breathe, just enough to make it harder than it seems like it should be.

Is this normal?

It is for me... but I have a deviated septum that needs surgery to remedy.

I don't want to do that right now though, so sometimes it becomes an excuse :o

It just sounds to me like you need to control your breathing. Your getting too winded and trying to suck in too much air. Takes time to develop.

Hmmm. So you're saying that if no other part of my body is giving me trouble, and it just seems like my nose is restricting my breathing, that for some reason I should slow down?

Oh, by the way, I feel like this 200 yards into a 2 mile run and I can maintain my pace for the entire distance. I don't really see this as "being winded". I'm well aware of what that feels like. LOL

No. I'm just speculating that that is the problem and suggesting that it takes time to develop a comfortable inhale through the nose with less trouble. Its the breathing that you have to learn to control. It will come in time if you keep training hard.

Your breathing is probably too shallow and too quick. This will cause you to not take in sufficient oxygen and not eliminating sufficient carbon dioxide. As a result, your body is oxygen starved.
Learn to control your breathing by taking in deeper, slower breaths and you will develop a better and more comfortable cardio workout.

I have never been able to breath through my nose. Welcome to the club. You will get used to it.

Sometimes it's not as simple as you would like to make it.

For instance, I was told by my ENT that because of my deviated septum and enlarged turbunoids that my nose was probably "operating" in the 50-60% range. It is physically impossible for it to move a "normal" amount of air.

Try all you want, at some point that kind of restriction will affect your training.

True. There are several reasons that would explain his trouble. I was just giving him the most common reason.

You may just be outside your "target" heart-rate, or in other words, working too hard. You should be able to maintain a reasonable conversation, or you're working a little too hard.

I've got that same damn problem which sucks because I don't breathe at my fullest potential due to restricted airflow to the nasal passage.
