View Full Version : Too much power?
I'm planning on getting another vehicle after the new year so I can have something to roll while my coupe is down. One of the ideas has been to get a bike, but everytime I mention what I want, everyone says, "don't get that, get a starter bike." Lame. I was leaning towards something fast. A fast cruiser, like a midnight warrior, or a fast sport bike, like an R1 or a Hyabusa, these are what I feel to be my options. I just keep getting told, "I don't get it, why something that fast?" For the record, I'd be a new rider, but I don't think any of this stuff is beyond my control if I just exercise a little patience and prudence when I ride. Opinions?

Get the biggest baddest bike there is and pin it leaving the dealership! 600s are sissy bikes!

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?

Nope!
Everyone that ever asks me what type of bike they should get as a starter bike gets the same answer-A USED DIRT BIKE AND GEAR!!!Do yourself a favor and learn on a dirt bike.If you drop it it doesnt matter cause you fell off in dirt and the chances are a lot better that the bike and you wont be damaged.
Now that thats said. If think "you'll be ok because your gonna take it easy" and are dead set on a street bike right now then get something used and a 600cc or less. Preferably something that has some rash already on it so it will be cheaper and you wont be all pissed at yourself if you drop it.Good luck :o

Oh, and ask the guys on here or another board that sell bikes about how many first time riders take off with high power bike and never have a problem.
The bikes you mentioned are fast. But so are 600's. A 600 is faster than you would believe. It's not like the difference between a GT and Cobra. If you go out and buy a $10,000 bike and drop it your gonna be pissed. If you go out and buy an 01-02 for $3-$4000 and drop it it wont be that big of a deal to you

I'm looking into getting a Warrior myself. Nice looking bike. I'm just afraid of getting on to a cruiser and then regretting it, but most tell me I'll still have fun on it. I know I can get one for a good price, it's just a matter of deciding whether or not I want to start all over on payments. I'm only 25 as well, but I love the look of some sport cruisers.
A '06 Yamaha Fz1 would be a great starter bike. ;) 150hp detuned R1 motor to get you around and still comfortable enough to ride all day. and I of a liquid silver fz1 that could be had for $6200 obo.

I would say that if you have never ridden before, get a cruiser. If you have speed in your blood and have to have a hotrod, get a 600.
My first bike was a 1000, but I have ridden dirtbikes all my life and had ridden some liter bikes in the past.

we have a guy that comes in that we call Big Stupid, for certain reasons. He bought a orange-yellow ninja 500 and brought it back right away pretty much and got a orange '06 zx10r. he's laid the bike down on both sides, probably more than once, and finally decided to get some frame sliders afterwards, lol.
But, we have had plenty of people come in and buy new 600's as first bikes. Even just had a guy come in and buy a '08 Kawasaki Versys as his first bike right after he took the msf course.
the way I see it, if you take the MSF course, buy whatever you want.

If you think a 600 is too slow then you just aren't riding hard enough. If you are just worried about looks and having the fastest bike out of all your friends then get an R1!

A friend of mine started on an R1... then he bought a brand new R1. He's never been down and is what I would consider a pretty damn good rider he just doesn't have any interest in stunting. I took the liberty of crashing on of his bikes by making a stupid mental error as a noobie rider. I now ride basically the same bike I wrecked and haven't had any problems with it. However, I want a smaller bike....
So you want to buy my R1? It's an 05 with 6k miles. ;) The R1 isn't that fast anyway, it has no low end. :)

You don't need a liter to wheelie, someone post a pic of Bob riding highchairs down the highway on his beat ol' F3. Shit, every stunter on the planet rocks an F4i.
I know, I know, his junk was geared. A 91 F2 will get up at highway speeds in a normal stand up stock, any modern day 600 will do it too, technique/bp>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>hp/pow pow power whoolie.
I'm not jumping on your for the wheelie comment, I figured you were screwing around.

Make sure to put me in as the beneficiary on your life insurance policy and I guess you can write me in for the coupe as well.
As far as choice in size...it doesn't matter as it doesn't take a racer or somebody who's been riding for years to get from point A to point B. Now, pull that throttle back and watch the front end get nervous on a 600 or watch the bike come out from under you with a liter.

I'll be the first to admit, I didn't read anyone elses response.
BUT if you want to be smart, go buy a dirt bike.
Drive it off road, learn how to hold your balance, learn how to handle a bike.
TRUST me you will fall sooner or later and I'd rather do it on a dirt bike than a street bike. Besides after you get used to a dirt bike, the transition to a street bike is natural. Plus you'll still have the dirt bike to screw around with (And they are cheap).
Who knows after riding a dirt bike for a bit, you may come to the conclusion a bike is not for you.

I went that route because of three friends that started on 600s adn wanted more before the bike was paid off... so I said fuck it and got the 1000 and have owned three since all Gsxr 1000s... Be real with yourself tho.. if you think you need to be "restricted" then you probably do... 600's have plenty for a starter

Get a 600.
A 1000 is about 1/2 sec faster in the 1/4 mile and 10mph faster top speed.
And heavier.
Don't take advice here, go ride some bikes and see what you like. If you've never riden a bike, a 600 will scare you for sure.

Probably closer to .70-.80 quicker in the 1/4, and about 15-20mph faster top speed.
Which is a HUGE difference on a motorcycle.
Be honest with yourself.
FACT: 90% of the riders on the road today, don't ride these sport bikes regardless of C.C.'s to even 90% of their potential. If they did, they'd be sitting alongside Ben Spies, Matt Mladin, and others right now.
