Why wasn't he released after the first arrest? I thought Mack runs a tight ship, Venom? What's up with your holy boy now?

Texas player arrested for drug possession, another cited
Thursday, September 13, 2007
(TYLER, BEAUMONT NOTE)

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas senior safety Tyrell Gatewood is in Travis County Jail today, charged with two drug possession counts.

Gatewood was arrested after a Travis County deputy stopped his vehicle for not signaling a turn while he and freshman defensive back Ben Wells were on a drive near Austin.

A sheriff's spokesman says the deputy smelled marijuana, searched the vehicle and found marijuana, Xanax and a baby bottle full of cough syrup containing codeine.

Gatewood's bond is set at $5,000. He's also held on a Dallas County reckless driving warrant from March. Bond for that charge was set at $500.

The senior from Tyler switched from wide receiver to safety before the 2006 season, and has played mostly on special teams.

Wells was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and released. The Beaumont Ozen alumnus was a prep All-American and all-state selection. He graduated from high school early to enroll at Texas and take part in spring drills.

Just cause he was a "special teams player," Longhorn fans wont care if he's booted.

Wow what a suprise, another drug charge. I would have never guessed that. If they put as much effort into winning national and confrence championships as they do robbing people and doing drugs they might have a respectable program.

1 national championship
1 confrence championship

Is that all Mack has to offer? Other than abunch of theifs and drug addicts??

I couldn't care less. Venom's always the first one to throw stones, when players from colleges other than UT make headlines for doing something stupid. He's always claiming Mack runs a tight ship, and will kick someone off the team at the first sign of trouble. Then complains about how xxxxx University cheated because they had a player play when he should have been suspended, or kicked out of the program for whatever dumb shit said player had done.

I'm just giving him a dose of his own medicine. ;)

Psssst.....

Lean, syrup, whatever you want to call it is a controlled substance. And while we're at it, so is Xanax. ;)

Yeah I know, just saying, the charges were all dropped in his previous arrest thus why he was not penalized by UT.

well there were never any charges placed on mcfadden yet venom thinks he should have been punished for trying to stop a guy from stealing his cousin's car. this is venom we are talking about, not the brightest bulb in the pack.

This along with James Henry's arrest is just more proof of a small number of people taking advantage of Mack Brown/Texas. You can do all the background checks in the world, but you never can know what people will do in the future. The key here is to not allow players to continually get away with making poor choices and Mack Brown has done an excellent job at responding and dealing with these issues.

It sucks that UT gets all the press because Florida also had 6 players get into legal trouble this offseason, but I guess that isn't as sexy of a story. That is the way it rolls and there isn't much that can be done about it other than handle it with tact and quickness.

Where did I claim that Larry Coker was at fault at Miami? I don't believe I've ever said that. However, they are the one's who brought in a recruit, Willie Williams, who already had a sordid criminal past before he even took a recruiting visit to Miami and even got arrested while he was down there on a visit.

I don't think any of these arrests are okay. I think it is horrible and embarassing for the University, Mack Brown, the team, and the entire State of Texas. It is very disheartening to see people take for granted the opportunity to attend Texas for free and get all the media exposure and a shot at the NFL.

I'll bump this because people give Venom a hard time. The fact is that big time college coaches can't baby sit 150+ kids on the team. At some point, they have to grow up and act like maturing "adults." All they can do is recruit "clean" kids and try and give them the opportunity to grow as football players, academics, and young men. As long as a coach isn't recruiting know "bad apples," then I have no problem with them (a la Stoops and Bomar).

You UT nutsuckers are all the same. What did Bomar do that was on the level of all ELEVEN players of yours that got arrested this season? Fucking nothing. Don't worry. Excuses are going to fly like wildfire. Just wait......

Maybe I wasn't clear enough with that one. I meant that no one knew/thought Bomar was going to get into the mess he did. I don't hold that against Stoops/OU. It was just a situation that happened, and Stoops dealt with it accordingly -- the way Mack and UT have handled their situations as well. They support the kids where appropriate and then dismiss where necessar.
