It doesn't look like I will have the time to go dove hunting this week in west Texas. I just don't have the time. Are there any open leases or public land around in the area? Thats legal.

Well, One of my boys and I went out to scout the Corp of engineers Grapevine hunting area and we really didn't find much of a hunting spot. We saw several dove, but no big amount. The problem is that where ever you could find a clearing to shoot from, it was too over grown to find your birds once you drop them. There is still another area we are going to check out that we wasn't able to hike from where we parked. It was just way too dense. I looked on the GPS and found what looked like clearer fields further to the west. Maybe we can go look at the area tomorrow or something.

I got the name of a guy about 10 min. north of Abilene in Anson if you are interested. $50 per day. I just got back. Got 60 between two of us in two days. Last part of yesterday we found a flyway and were picking off white wings left and right. If my old man could shoot worth a damn we would have had well over 60.....er, I mean, we could have had well over 60, but that would have been over the limit.

I have several places that I can hunt all around the Abilene area as well as around Childress for free. I just dont have the time right now to make the trip. Thanks though. Sounds like you guys had a great time.
I went back out and scouted the west side area today and just now figured out that I was about 20 to 100 yards off the hunting area. :o Looking on the GPS I can see that I actually walked about 10 yards on the the hunting land, turned around and walked back. But now that I have the area down, I'll take another peak tomorrow or later this week.

If you are looking for local, check out lake lewisville....you might have to get a special pass from the corps, but I know you can duck hunt there. You can also hunt on Lake Lavon, so I would guess there are several lakes around you can hunt on. I want to find something local as well so me and my friends can take our kids out one weekend on a whim and not have to plan a huge trip.

there's some decent hunting in the Graham area, and we used to hunt out near krum.
Neither were very good last time I went out though.

Well, you actually have to have several things to hunt on corps land. In addition to a state license you have to have a corp permit and no matter what age you are, you have to take and pass the hunting safety class. www.hunter-ed.com
Also, they are limited to an x amount of hunters, 1st come 1st served. I think Grapevine hosts 200 hunters.
