i have a 96 formula, and would like to retain the stock head unit so i can keep my steering wheel radio controls. I have a kicker solo baric l5 12" i was thinking about having installed in my car. can this be done with the stock head unit?

Yes, you will need a line out converter. You can pick one up at pretty much any shop that sells car audio equipment.

im thinking of taking it to dman's shop here in carrollton in a few weeks, and getting it done. just wanted to see if it was possible before wasting his time.

Thought you were selling your formula? Did the deal not work out for the trade you were considering? Well if you need a LOC, i keep them in the store. Use the Pac SNI35, its adjustable and will work fine for you, or you can use a TrunkLOC and use the rear speaker leads to create a remote turn on for you amp. Just holler when ya need one.
