.45 acp is just the cartridge name. don't think there is a different gun.
XD45 is the name of the gun. comes in 3 sizes. compact, service, and tactical.

There is .45 ACP and .45 GAP. They are different, and you can get an XD in either.
Make sure you know what you're buying.

.45 ACP is what the .45 GAP dreams of being when it grows up. True story.

So what's the difference?
I may be picking up a Springfield XD45 Friday. I'm new to guns. I've seen both of these models and wondered the same thing as the op.

So what's the difference?
ACP = Automatic Colt Pistol.
The .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol, 11.43 x 23 mm) is a rimless pistol cartridge designed by firearms designer John Browning in 1905, for use in his prototype Colt semi-automatic .45 pistol
GAP = Glock Automatic Pistol.
The .45 G.A.P. pistol cartridge was designed by Ernest Durham, an engineer with CCI/Speer, at the request of firearms manufacturer Glock to provide a cartridge that would equal the power of the .45 ACP but was shorter to fit in a more compact handgun

In some frames designed for the 9mm & 40S&W, you can't chamber a longer round like a 10mm or 45ACP. The GAP allowed Glock to fit a larger caliber in a smaller frame (among other things).
Not a bad idea, not necessarily a great execution though.

All gun sites are blocked from my work. :(

I'm a gun newb, so none of that really makes much sense to me.
If I am buying a Springfield XD 45, what is the real difference (in simplified terms) between the ACP and GAP?
Thanks.

For all intents and purposes, the GAP is about equivalent to a 45ACP +P. From a users standpoint, the GAP will require more expensive ammo while the ACP is a staple and will never go away.
I don't even know if those two guns are different size or not. If not then price of ammo is about the only thing you'll see. Functionally either is fine.

+P? What is that?

Why is the ammo more expensive in one than the other? Why do they even have the different models if there is no real difference?

+p means it is a hot shot. It has more powder.

+P? What is that?More velocity, more power.Why is the ammo more expensive in one than the other? Why do they even have the different models if there is no real difference?It's more expensive because it's not nearly as common. The only real difference is that it can fit into a slightly smaller pistol frame.

Like above, +p means the pressure specs are higher. Basically to differentiate it from older loadings when guns were made to older specs.
Why did Glock make the round? Some would say to put their name on a bullet. Probably has some truth to it. However they were able to build a 45 that was slightly smaller, and Glocks are all about comfy service use over all else.
Why do others chamber the same round? Because it costs them very little to do so, as Glock is footing the R&D and marketing for the round. If it takes off then they have an XD that covers the GAP and are not behind the game.
Why so expensive? Its all about volume. 45ACP, 40S&W and 9mm are the kings of volume. 38spl/357magnum is now probably less popular even. All others are limited availability, ranging from the fairly common 10mm and 44 magnum to the almost unseen 41 Action Express or 44-40. Rounds die over time after they lose too many serviceable platforms. Glock is hoping to supply a large enough volume of platforms (with other manufacturers) to cover that part of the equation. I personally wouldn't get a gun in 45 GAP if I had my choice, but not because it is bad, just because it isn't anything that fills a niche for me. But a great deal is always a great deal....
