The cheapest by-the-box I have seen recently is Monarch FMJ at Academy. Somewhere around $4.60 per box.

So Wolf ammo is crap ? I have a guy locally that wants to sell me a box of 1000 shells for $175.00 . Is that about right ? Should I even bother with the stuff ?

wolf is cheap, if you dont mind cleaning your ar little more often, it is a good ammo to go blow thru a couple hundred rounds and not hurt your wallet to bad

So the only thing wrong with Wolf ammo is that it is dirty? What make ammo dirty?

It is the powder that makes it dirty. There are different types of Wolf ammo that are out there. They used to make a laquor coated ammo, it is easy to see as it looks orangish in color and looks painted, it is steel cased. The new stuff is steel cased with a polymer coating, grey in color. The 223 is Berdian primed, which means you cannot reload it without some special equipment. I have used the newer stuff in my Rock River AR and have fired upwards of 1400 rounds without a single problem with it. I have even shot 700 at one range sesion without a cleaning, and it ran like a swiss watch. If it is laquor coated stay away from it. When the breach gets hot the laquor will soften and become sticky. It will be a PIA to clean also. If it is the newer stuff then 175 is a good price. I remember just a few years ago I was picking up cases of Wolf 223 for 145 delivered for 1000 rounds. Now it is 250 for the same 1000 rounds.
