What do you guys think of Mossberg shotguns? Just looking for something for home defense and to go shoot out in the country. I saw an Academy ad for a 12 ga or 20 ga single barrel pump for ~$160.... Opinions welcome!!

I own one for duck hunting since my Browning won't shoot steel shot...and I really don't want to take the chance of dropping a $1000 gun into a lake. I have never had any problems with it. It is a bit heavy for what it is, but not bad for the price.

The cheaper one ~ $160.00 has plastic in the internals, get the model 500, it's a bit more but it will last alot longer and is a better gun IMO.

I picked up one from Academy a few months ago for the exact same reason, home defense. I've taken it to the range, I have no issues with it. It's definitely fine for the job you need it to do.

the only thing that i don't like about mossbergs is the fact that they're known to be cheap "throw down" guns, and they don't hold their value... the remington 870 is a better choice in my opinion...it's going to cost a big more, but you can find an express at wal-mart or academy for around $200.

The mavericks are(cheap throwdowns), the mossbergs are actually quite nice(maverick being their cheaper line)
Ive always heard the 870 express was the be-all cheap shotty that most liked, even though some say they are cheap...
I picked up my Mossberg 500 for $240 @ Academy, comes with a pistol grip  , and so far seems pretty decent.

looks like there is a Winchester model 1800 defender in the classifieds for around 200 bucks, that is a better gun than the Mossberg I think.
Shit maybe I'll buy it.

I won't own a Mossberg. No one in my family of hunters will own Mossbergs and if a family of rednecks won't use them, you know it's junk. The few that I have encountered back home were utter crap.

I have a maverick for home use and have put a few thousand rounds through it without issue. I dont hunt and have a minimal investment in it. Its fine for what it is but I dont recommend it as a hunting piece.

There's nothing wrong with a Mossberg 500. I've owned one, and fired MANY and have never had an issue. Period.
The Remington 870 Police shotgun I've owned since 1993 is in great working order, and it was used when I bought it.

This is my mossberg 835. I love it. There's nothing wrong with the Maverick that you're thinking about if you only plan to use it for home defense.

they are fine guns. I just sawed the barrel down on mine last week (within legal limts) and put on a pistol grip. looks pretty sweet. I also have a kick ass 835 turkey gun that I love. i would step up to the mossberg instead of the maverick though.

I appreciate all the advice/experience. I don't want to go the el cheapo route necessarily, but I don't need to spend a lot either.
I will look into the 500, but what other shotguns would ya'll recommend for home defense/range shooting? Also, what gauge, if it matters that much, would you go with?

just got done bird hunting this weekend using my new mossberg 12 gauge pump, loved it. the gun has a lot to do with the way it performs, but if the owner dosen't know how to shoot, then that person gets shitty results and blames the guns.
