looking for a decent receiver (home)

I'm thinking about getting me a new one once we move. Man thing I will have one room that I'm making my movie/game room. Its not very big but it will work. Right now I have a Sony, but its like 6-7 years old. Still works fine, but just thinking about up grading alittle. Maybe even speakers to. Any suggestions.?

fry's online had sony 7.1 with xm and hd tuners for under 200.00. I got 1 and it is not bad for the money.

I bought one a Yamaha HTR-5960 a few months back and I'm really happy with it. The only thing it doesn't do that I wish I had but I don't really need right now are HDMI inputs. It even has phono inputs.

You might as well get a good quality instead of trying to go too cheap. You'll regret it if you don't.

I would say Onkyo or HK. How much money do you want to spend?

I originally was looking at Denon and Onkyo too. They are both good, but the Yamaha was the better value. It had more features for less money and sounds fantastic in my setup.

I just dont like the crazy/useless sound modes in Yamaha's. They are a lot harder to use than Onkyo and Denon.

thanks guys, I might go by Fry's tomorrow to see what they have. I have seen a few HK'd I like. So many brands out there I didn't even know. Hell I never heard of Onkyo or Denon.

Do you need HDMI support? Look at the newer ones. You can get the whole Onkyo HTIB for $449, it's a pretty solid deal. I have a similar version of the receiver, except it supports 3 HDMI's and it's pretty nice. It's also basically the only receiver that supports hdmi 1.3/deep color and definitely the cheapest for the price/amount of features.

The speakers are a good set, too for the money.

We have a Denon and a Onkyo at my house and I like the Denon better.

I dont know how anyone can provide a suggestion on the information you have provided... I think the best thing you can do is

1) determine how the reciever is going to be used; games/movies/music, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, as well as many other factors. what are you looking to spend? etc...

2) do a lot of reading on www.avsforum.com like you will realize you dont need HDMI 1.3

For instance, (and i am a beginner at this whole HT thing as well), if you are going to be using a PS3 for watching blu-rays, the PS3 only outputs audio in certian formats, not all recievers support that (like the new Onkyo 605 which i was looking at getting)... not saying it wont work but if you want the most out of your system then it is best to do some research.

So its hard to say 'buy X brand'.... i am sure they make a good product but it may not be what YOU need.

No, you don't "need" it, but when looking at buying something that has next-generation features, for really the same price, its normally a good idea. Most of this seasons TV's are coming out with HDMI 1.3 support, which is deep color. There are currently only a couple of devices that support it. 2-3 TV's, PS3/HD-DVD A-20, etc.

That denon is friggin sweet and pretty costly!

I'd go with the AVR-247 Harmon Kardon. Probably one of the best recievers for the money. It upconverts all sources to 720p.

One very similar to it is the Yamaha rx-v661bl plus its all black but it doesnt use DCDi.
Yamaha use to use it, but just copied it and made their own.

They are both $499.
