Antivirus opinions?

I have a valid copy of Norton Antivirus Professional but havent installed it yet and was wondering if there are any good free antivirus programs available that wont fill up my harddrive with all kinds of other crap, slow down my system, and load the screen up with icons?

System is a 3ghz Pentium D with 1gb ram, Windows XP Home SPII.
