I have a few songs I got off of my friend that are m4u format, from what I found that is MPEG 4 compression. The songs, especially on the bass, are very distorted. Do I need a certain codec to play these correctly?

Shouldn't matter.

if so, get the k-lite codec pack

that is itunes format. try to find a converter online.
