View Full Version : Motorcycle Trailer Tie Downs
I was curious if anyone had installed Eye-Bolts so that they can secure their bike on the trailer. And if so what size Eye-Bolt did you use. I have always tied down using the edge of the trailer etc. but would like to set my trailer up with tie downs, just curious on the size to use.
Thanks

I have been using the bed of my truck, but that is getting old with me hauling around 3 bikes. I am looking into a trailer. So as of now I have no experience with trailers and hauling bikes.

When I had my trailer (6x8 utility trailer) I had U-bolts welded to the front and sides. 2 in the front, and four on the sides. I also installed some removable wheel chocks in the front. Used 2 chocks and 3 install kits - allowed me to have both bikes on the trailer at once or one in the middle. Worked well for me.
If I had to do it in my truck again I would definitley get a wheel chock. I can't begin to count the number of times I dented the front of my bed snugging the front wheel up against the bed.

if its enclosed, get some e-track so you can move them around. i have a 5x8 utility trailer, and welded 6 d-rings to the rails & floor. they're maybe 2" square, 1/4" diameter. plenty big for a bike. i also cut the hooks off my straps, and use a stainless steel carabeener (sp?) on each end instead. a buddy of mine hit a bump on the highway once, and the suspension on teh bike compressed enough for the hooks on one side to come off and the bike fell off the side. the carabeeners lock in place so that can't happen.

I have a Utility as well. Can you take a couple pics of your set up?
Thanks

maybe this weekend, but its across town right now. it has 1ft tall sides, so i have d-rings each corner, one on the middle of the front rail, and one in the middle of the floor in the back. if you have a cheapie trailer, you might want to weld some bracing in, mine has a mesh floor and flexes quite a bit when you crank down on the straps.

i went to home depot and got some d-rings...that way when you're not using them, they slide down flush with the trailer floor.

You can go get a piece of angle iron and bolt it across the front of the trailer on the floor and drill some holes in it. Same thing as eye loops but a lot more sturdy and safe.
