I lost my front sprocket last night, doing a hair under triple digits when it happened. Thankfully it didn't lock up the chain, and I was able to get all the way over to the shoulder without getting rear-ended. As late as it was, I haven't had a chance to pull the fairing and see exactly what happeded yet...

Happened to me on a friend's freshly custom painted R1 DEEP in 5th gear going down 360 at about 3am one night. First thought was something happened to the motor and I grabbed the clutch by instinct and was HARD on the brake. A few moments of grabbiness/chatter but it didn't really lock up. Nut and sprocket were still within the sprocket cover.

I'm pretty sure that's the case here as well. I don't get it though, the front sprocket even has that big locking washer to make sure it doesn't spin loose.

have you changed the sprocket recently? i have seen other r6's where the owner didnt replace the lock washer when regearing and the sprocket comes off.

I went -1/+3 with a 520 chain a couple hundred miles ago, but I did put the lock washer back on.

if you reused the one that was on it before the gear change then that piece failed. they are designed for one use then replace when you put on a new sprocket.

That I didn't know, and is most likely what happened. Thinkin' about it, I don't see how the chain didn't lock up. When I looked down the plastic chain slider had slid out, and it looks like the sprocket was just sitting up in there. Some how the chain was spinning lose in there at thousands of RPMS, and didn't ge caught or yanked out.

Never use an impact on transmission components, loctite would have been my choice and a new washer.

I've never had the need to use an impact on a bike.. ever. cept maybe the bolt thru the eyehole on the shock mount.

As another stroke of luck, I walked it across the access there just north of Belt line, and the parking lot had a 3 foot drop to the next one. I got a ride to the house, came back with my truck, backed it up to the ledge, and rolled the bike right on. I don't have ant 4x's at the house, so the bike's still in the back of my truck. Looks like I amy be buying a ramp sooner than expected.

Well if you ever get in a bind next time, just give me a holler. I've got a trailer with a ramp that's easy to roll up on and all the necessary stuff to secure the bike. I've picked up a couple of friends late at night that have had flats and dropped the bikes off the next day. Trailer makes things so much easier ;)

'Preciate the offer, but Adam, Trey, and I just pulled it off my truck by hand.
I'll keep it in mind Rodney, but I'm lookin' for something a bit wider.

DO NOT put loctite on that nut. It should be a lock nut anyway. Use an impact. Who ever said dont use one is an idiot. With Loctite you would NEVER, I mean NEVER get that thing off there. Leave the trans in neutral, wrap a shop towel around the sprocket, and impact it on with a 1/2 inch impact. Ive never had one come off. Trans failures come from ppl who try to torque the nut to spec by hand with the bike in gear.
