dude, i said in the third post i was going to be calling EW, he runs a car audio shop. i just had a blown 10" JL, and wanted to get the new speaker in the car, but it a 12". or are you implying i am cheap cause i mounted face first into the box? the box has plenty of air space for the speaker, just a little shallow for the larger speaker to in conventually.

Dont get offended. I have too many years experience myself, We are the custom installers out there! Doesnt matter how you are mounting the sub. I am implying you are cheap because that is what you said, a box for under $45! Which means you will be getting some box made of a poor quality wood, youll have some flex and more than likely a crapy sound. And if your running any kind of quality woofer you will have no justice whatsoever. . I dont really care if you go see this EW, myself, or any other installer out there. My point is save the $45 and put it to a good box, So what if you dont have a little boom boom for a bit, its wiser money spent to get the decent box, pre built or custom built.

i can understand that. so how much should a 3/4 MDF, 1.7 cu ft, sealed box cost? but honestly, it does not sound bad right now. i am not expecting competition winning sound. hell you would most likely slap me if you saw how everything was in there right now, but it works, sounds good, and rattled the tin at the car wash when i tuning it(did not want to piss the neighbors off).

well the biggest problem with that is most cheap single boxes wont be MDF anyway. We carry some at the store here and there, but i mainly use them if i have a single left over sub, i am trying to get rid of, ill just give a box away with it. The best way is to have a shop build a simple box, probably run $150-$350 depending is sealed or ported...If a shop tells you any less, then they probably dont know what they are doing, or they have to idea what their time is worth. Sure i could build one for $45, but why would I, i have to get the wood (actually have in stock), design it (correctly for woofer you are using), build it (glue and staple)(depending of woofer, may need to use screws as well)..And poss. carpet it or otherwise as a option..So i have to use my table saw (a $10,000) investment i have to pay for, router it (another investment to pay for), oh and pay for the electricity i am using, the AC to be in the shop (hate the Heat), etc. etc. So you see what i am trying to say. Shops have to take all that into account, and if you hit a big enough chain (man hate to say ie: a car toys), then they have overhead, lots of it to pay for..And if your a good shop (like me, lol...had to throw that in), youve invested good money in computer programs, software, etc. to aid you in your cad designing, etc. So all said and done, the BEST way is to have a custom box made (meaning designed to YOUR WOOFER you are using)...If that is not a option at this time, a good prefabbed box would be a PRO BOX....I have known the company and the owner for years. He started out building boxes, and hey it dont hurt he has a million dollars in CNC machines. But really they are one of the best, because they are MDF, and can get painted or carpeted, and are fairly cheap for a simple, or you can go with a turbo box, or ported, bandpass, etc. I hope some of this has helped. Again wasnt trying to offend you, just wanted you too see all aspects of the business. Good luck with whatever decision you go with. And as always happy to help or answer questions if you got any. Take Care.

True, plus I thought they were using HDF. As a shop, the reality is that you have to offer lower priced alternatives for people who don't want to pay for a custom enclosure. You are also correct on enclosure pricing. By the time you factor in design time, build time, tools, wood, glue, nails/screws, carpet glue, and carpet, that is where you will be.

EW, thanks for the back up. I believe you are correct on the HDF for the coated and MDF on the smaller hatches..I also hear some talk that they are going to stop doing hatches altogether, and going more to the Loaded boxes only, but will still do turbo and some ported and bandpasses. At least for now. Gerald has been into designing woofers for a little while now on his loaded only boxes. Will be selling installed into a majority of his boxes, but not selling subs outright. LOL, Weve had this argument for some time, he wants to go practically all loaded. My thinking at least for me is, If i cant get the boxes with no woofers, then i cant sell a sub my customer wants. Therefore, i may and do lose the sell on the box, if its a application i may have to build a box, he comes back with the loaded sound GREAT and are priced good, BUT as i have already found out, His woofers can get easily damaged (blown) and he doesnt warranty blown coils, says they overexcurted them, well ok, but if im slapping a Boston into them, and i never really have a problem, but if i do, Boston takes immediate care of me, but probox leaves me and the customer hanging. So i dont know. But they do make good boxes, lol.....another discussion over a cold beverage, lol....

About 3 months ago I bought a box at Frye's for (2) 12's for $20! Sealed and covered in gray carpet. It's holding up pretty well so far. U might check on outpost.com to see if they have any for singles...
