View Full Version : Upconvert DVD players worth it?

I'm really enjoying my HD Plasma and I'm wanting to know if it's worth buying an upconvert DVD player to match the quality of my TV. Really don't want to spend money on an HD or Blue-Ray DVD Player right now either as either is pretty expensive and I don't feel like buying my whole DVD collection again only to find out either technology goes the way of the Betamax.

Opinions?

Our PS3 upconverts video up to 1080p. Unfortunatley our tv only had 1080i and 720P. With that said, there is a nice difference from the standard definition.
Heh, I guess I don't have to buy an additional Blu-Ray player.

Jose, if you want, I can bring the PS3 to your place, grab an HDMI cable, and slap it on your plasma so you can see the difference, if you'd like.

Well that's something to think about, getting the Upconvert DVD Player to match to the TV. Need to figure that out.

No they are not. Spend the money and buy the real HD or Blu Ray player. The gurus in the AV forums rave about the PS3. The biggest deal is firmware updates. Most companies that produce DVD players make them, and then turn them out without any updates. You are stuck with whatever you buy. They release updates frequently for the PS3.

If you have an HDMI cable laying around, I don't mind bringing the ps3 to your place so you can see the difference with the upscaling before you buy a stand alone player.

Shoot me a PM if you want to.

Ack! I don't want to spend that kind of money though man :( I've got a PS2 that's been sitting in an aluminum case at home for close to 2 years and hadn't been played. I keep telling myself that I should sell it but I keep thinking I'll get an urge to play some Gran Turismo or something :(

Still thinking about the upconvert. Fry's had a refurbished Toshiba this past weekend for $39. I went by there this morning and of course they were all gone.

A few months ago, I bought a Toshiba upconverting progressive scan DVD player from WOOT for $49. It was a MAJOR upgrade over what I had. I couldn't believe how much better it looked on my 52" dlp. I just bought a HD DVD player (Toshiba A2). It does upconverting too, but I can't really see a difference between it and the cheap Toshiba with standard disks. Both of them look really nice. I watched Predator the other night I couldn't believe it was just a standard DVD.

saw one in action yesterday on a Sharp projector and a 120" screen, I was MORE than impressed and will be replacing my Samsung upconverting unit asap. The Oppo 970 is only $150

I've only noticed they look good on plasma's, They tend to look more pixelated on LCD's. and if the good ones are the more expensive ones. (yamaha dvd5950 and this harmon kardon are the only ones I thought looked decent, and they are both $120+)

I would suggest getting a PS3. Constant updates, plus I know of a link that you can get 5 free Blu-ray discs with a qualifing blu-ray player (which a ps3 is)

Fry's has a toshiba upscaling one that I use on my bedroom LCD and it does a decent job. I got it for $39. Any HD-DVD/Blu-ray player will also up-convert SD DVD's.

Alas the PS3 is much to expensive option for me (although I hear Sony is dropping $100 off the price).

Did you pick it up this weekend or has Fry's had it on sale before?

Does that actually work, or is it a scam and they don't send you shit? Plus do you need to use the UPC code for warranty on the PS3?

It works. I just got my 5 in from my HD-A20 HD-DVD player I bought and I sent off the PS3 stuff about 2 weeks ago. I'll let you know, but I'm sure it'll be fine. The HD-DVD's took about a month to get here, Sony just copied that idea.

Jose.... I have a Toshiba HD-A2. You can get them for about $350. It plays HD and SD disks..

You're welcome to come over and check it out sometime on my 56" DLP. You too, Nick...

In fact, we need to have some home theater GTGs... those of us who know each other, anyway...

Actually, you can pickup the HD-A2 for around $199-$250, or less depending on the place/special. Amazon has the HD-A20 which offers native 1080p/24/hdmi 1.3 for $329, but there have been some recent specials with Fry's/Circuit City getting them around $299-$325.

Ack! I just don't want to spend the money on an HD player (or the HD DVD's) which is why I've been looking at the Upconverts.
