A friend of mine has a 98 YZF600. I rode it for him, after he bought it, back from carrolton. It ran fine the whole way back. He rode it shortly then he went away for 2 weeks. Came back and it runs like crap. It'll start if you have the choke on and give it some gas. Once it's started it idles around 3000 rpm's. After its warm you can take off with the choke on(but have to pump the throttle) but soon as you move the choke it dies. If your riding down the road and take the choke off it runs decent. WOT it runs fine but cruising down the road it jerks(choke on or off). I road it for about 20 miles, WOT on the highway a few times and still no difference.Once you pull the clutch in with no choke it dies.
I tried adjusting the idle control cable and it didn't make any difference. Only thing that has happened to the bike in that time is it was dropped on the right side. But he said it ran fine after that. Im thinking that the carb's are gummed up and need to be cleaned out/rebuilt. Im not a bike mechanic, Im a auto mechanic. I know they work the same but Im not familiar with it so I figured maybe one of yall could shed some light on the problem.

Sounds like carbs need to be rebuilt, my V45 was doing the same and a rebuild fixed it. Also found a small hole in the rubber piece on the throttle slide, I'm sure that didn't help.

Thats the same thing I was thinking. But I was reading another forum and a guy was having the same problem. He had the carbs rebuilt and still the same thing. He didt post if he had gotten it fixed or not. :(

most people or shops who take customer's money don't realize where the pilot jet is, let alone how small it is.........

Well I went over there today to take a look at it. I removed the tank and found out that the fuel cut off valve was in the closed position. The valve is not easy to get to at all so there was no way of looking to see if it was open or not. So what do you guys think about it now? Im thinking the fuel pump was sucking fuel past the shut off valve and eventually starved. So it wore out and isnt pumping enough fuel now. I removed the fuel pump and turned the ignition on. It shot some fuel out but I dont know how much it should be. I didnt have a gauge to hook up to it and even if I did I dont have any specs to compare with.I rode it around after turning on the valve and it does the same thing still.Any ideas?

Your the best mechanic I know so good luck. I could never fix it because I cant fix anything and suck at anything to do with a bike.Riding,fixing,etc...

carbs that small shouldn't require more than a few lbs of pressure.. i know it took me QUITE a while to use ~10 oz of gas in a makeshift tank when i was tuning the carbs on this ninja... i think you should prolly tear the carbs off, everyone seems to think it's the pilot jets. ;)
