i have a two channel amp that is 2 ohm stable and 4ohm DVC sub. i would hook it up R+ and L- at the amp and + on side one of the sub, jumper to the + on side two, and then - on side two and jumper to - on side one.

There is a very low probability that your 2 channel amp can run 2 ohm mono. So, you need to run the speaker in series not parrallel if each voice coil is 4 ohm.

ditto, if the amp is 2ohm stable on each channel that means when you bridge the two channels you end up with 1, 4ohm stable channel

that is the correct way to wire in parallel for a 2 ohm load. You will want to find out if your amp is 2ohm mono stable.

ok, is it better to run a lower ohm load with a the gain turned down, or high ohm with the gain turned up?

right now, the gain is just about all the way down, but it is wire as in the picture. if i wire it in series it is 8ohm, but i would have to turn the amp up some, which is better all around for the life of amp and sub?

If your amp is not 2 ohm mono stable, it will *probably* have a hot, short life running 2 ohm mono. Most two channel amps are not 2 ohm mono stable. If you're running 2 4 ohm voice coils in parallel, that is two ohm mono. Go buy a multi-meter or go to a local shop and have them check the ohm load of each coil so you can know for sure what is going on.

It would help if you tell us what brand/ model amp you have in order to give you an informed answer on how to wire the sub.

I have always run 2 channel amps that are at least 2 ohm mono stable( plus a particular little red amp stable down to .25 ohm :D )

Just get a 4 ohm SVC Subwoofer or run the amp in stereo. One voice coil to each channel.

switch'd it, had to turn gain up a little, but still less than half, still hits plenty good for me.

Whoa!!! I feel like I'm time traveling back to the days of inferior technology where a punch45 was the shit.
