View Full Version : Please explain Choppers.....

I understand the difference in the appeal between sport bikes and crusiers but I don't get the appeal of the extreme choppers and ape hangers.
Most of the bikes in the magzines are these really wild choppers that are hard tails that look really impractical to ride for any distance.
Are they just all about looks and going from bar to bar????
Thanks

It's all about "my dick is bigger than yours" and of course the ass that they pull!

Why would someone bother explaining it to you? It's pretty obvious you don't, and won't, get it. I guess the answer is "because someone likes it."
I really don't like the overstretched, ape hangar, 2ft wide tire, candy skulls thing. But choppers were originally cut-down factory frames with some rake and they evolved into something different.
They can be ridden as far as your ass will drive them. And hell yes it's all about looks.

I am not putting them down. In fact I think a lot of them look really good. But to me bikes are all about riding them and they look like they would be really unpleasant/difficult to ride. From everything I have heard, the more rake the front has the harder it is to ride and I don't even want to think about how pleasant a "hard tail" is on your butt.......
So I guess my question is: are people just tolerating the ride for the looks or are they easier/more pleasant to ride than they look???
What I dont understand is the guys who ride a harley and have the bar's so tall its like they have to stand up to reach them

They make them for the same reason people build cars with manual brakes, no a/c, no power steering, no radio. Its about what you want. Its all subjective and opinion based. That being said im too big of a puss for a hard tail but what I listed above for a car is no problem for me.

if you want confortable, get a goldwing, anything else is going to suck to ride for more than 300 miles a day.
And I havent ever ridden a goldwing so dont hold me to that.
past that, its everything to do with looks, and image.

different strokes for different folks.
i will comment about the ape hangers though. i have ape hangers on quite a few different bikes and you would be suprised on how they make the bike feel. they actually give you more control. they are wider than the traditional drag bars so you have alittle more leverage on the front end.
another good thing about them is they'll make a small bike feel alittle bigger and more comfortable to ride. i ussually stay between the 12-16" apes but on my current bike i have drag bars.
bikes are like cars. you can make what you want out of them. i bet probably 80% of the people would throw up if they saw my bike but i like it and i built it.
once again different strokes for different folks.

My chopper is not bad at all to ride. It does not feel like a Harley Softtail, but it does not make me piss blood either.
Nothing looks better than a rigid chopper, springer frontend, early motor, and an open belt drive. Ape hangars look cool when they are on the right bikes and they feel great on your back when you are riding a long distance.
One of the greatest feelings in the world is kickstarting your chopper. It is worth the strain on the knees. Putting your foot on that peddle and kicking the fucker alive has something primitive about it and makes my goddamned dick rock hard every time I do it.
I think everything has it's time and place on a bike. A quick little rigid with some mini apes is bad as fuck, as well as a wide tired stretched chopper with billet all over it. I always hear people saying billet aluminum is gay, and I know what they mean, but they also have no response when you show them a Choppers Inc bike that is covered in billet aluminum. Billy blends the old with the new seamlessly and it just works. So, with the right application, anything fits.

I've always thought of em as the lowriders of motorcycles. It's all about the image, they don't neccesarily serve any actual purpose, but it is fun to have one and show it off. Of course, my sportbike doesn't really serve much of a purpose either, unless you need to get somewhere really fast. :D

twist the throttle a few times, bump the motor over a couple of times to get some gas in the cylinders, then get it back on top dead center, turn the key on and stand on it. they'll fire everytime. just make sure when you kick you go all the way to the end, when the kicker bottoms out, or it'll kick back on you. i've been kick'n panheads, shovels and ironheads for years and have never had a single problem.

It all depends on the size of the motor. Mine has kicked me back and that hurts, and also, mine has just fell through on the kick, meaning there was no compression on that stroke and you hyper-extend your knee...........that really hurts.
Bigger the motor, the harder the kick. Compression reliefs help.

for the real bike guys, making your own, cuting the frame, re welding what ever where ever you want it is part of the whole thing.... anyone can buy a stupid WCC or some pre fab crap....
crXpert (myk) makes all his stuff personally and that makes em that much more badass, I got a frame and some parts from him and im building my own also.
I dont understand how a guy on a gear head site for mustangs is asking why with bikes.... wtf?
